.Justin,
Hello, I'm doing the sound for a dance show based around a variety of musicals such as, Chicago, Wicked, We Will Rock You, Grease, Joseph and some others I was wondering if anyone could point me the right the right way of some intro / prologue music I could use for about 30 second - 90 Seconds ? gareth
Your profile says you're a Senior Sound Designer. The implications of that title are that you're pretty experienced at sound design (hence the seniority), so surely you can work out something as simple as what to use for an overture for a "songs from the shows" type of production? As a matter of interest, where is it that you're "senior sound designer"? Edit : Ahhh, hang on, another of your posts mentions "at my school" - let me guess, you're a pupil who's given himself some grand-sounding titles? Senior this, Senior that, Director of something. Sounds great when you tell your mates about it, doesn't it? Means bugger-all, though. If my assumption is wrong, and you're not a schoolboy, then a) I apologise, and b) where the hell do you work where you have a set of job titles like that?! ian_gibbs
Have you asked the Director/Producer? In my experience they tend to have an idea of what they want played and asking them now will save them telling you 5mins before the house opens. Gareth Owen
Are you looking for music to actually play as part of the show - ie like a prolouge or an entra'acte - or are we talking music as the audience walk in? The latter is easy - anything vaugley in keeping with the style of show should work - the former, more tricky as it forms an integral part of the show. As Ian said you will need guidance from the Director to get this right. On another note, the other Gareth above does have a point - maybe toning down your job description in your profile may save you from putting any more noses out of joint :D
cedd
Title issues aside, I always used to like "The Jellicle ball" from Cats. The instrumental version (half way through the cd) is a really nice little opener, isn't too hard to cut to length and is really quite nicely produced. My version does seem to have a touch of hiss in the background for some reason, despite having come from cd - I suspect the original recording is quite old. Easily EQ'd out though. I guess with it being a school (I assume it is) that PRS issues will be taken care of? Alternatively, there's a nice point half way through "Dancing through life" from Wicked that lends itself to a cut. Think you end up being left with the last minute or so of the track which is pretty uplifting and quite a nice little opener. All depends on what's already in the show and whether you want the audience to know what it is. I can think of plenty of obscure musicals that have good overture material.Directors choice at the end of the day, and if you've got an in-house band, you might want to let them play something.
