Doing what? Surly that's the point you're making in the thread where this started Paul. A skilled VT op is going to be asking more than a recent college graduate who's just doing a bit of crewing.

 

Also, I'm afraid the range of your rates don't go nearly low enough. Many (most?) people in theatre are working for well below £10 - which would equate to £100 for a 10 hour day.

Presumably you're referring to a basic daily rate, excluding expenses, etc?

 

With regard to Tom's point about the numbers not going low enough - my guess is that Paul's referring to freelance rates, not casual rates. It's a very different ball game!

A valid point, but surely this thread is relating to Freelance jobs instead of through-the-books-theatre?

 

I'm sure some people here don't even get £50-£60 for a 10hr day :angry:

When I was at Uni I could get £50/day humping flightcases as casual gig crew and £150/day pointing a camera at media training trainees.

If I was doing a poll on what do you think a fair daily rate is for a VT operator I would have written JUST that . It's a general question......... and not job specific.

I get about £10 an hour so I'm off the bottom of the scale. But then again I work a 35 hour week, get 5 weeks paid holiday a year. A pension where my employer contributes twice as much as I do. Full sick pay, and only one production every 6 weeks lasting just a week.

The problem is that rates are dependant on the Job, I expect to get paid different amounts if I am just crewing, or If I am Programming, or Crew Chief, or VT etc etc.

 

Specify what Job you want to know the rate for and You'll get better answers

Trust me there is method to my madness.

 

I have specifically kept this poll unrelated to any specific job or role. All we will be revealed.

Just looking at a board opping job at a venue in London, where its a standard 24 hour week with 8 hours overtime per week, and its a gross pay of about £330 a week, which means you take home about £220 a week (I believe).

 

I wont give away too many details about the job until I findout if I've got it or not, ** laughs out loud **.

But to me that sounds fairly reasonable. Its a standard 4 hour show call, paid at a fair rate.

Just to continue the topic of daily rates, I am applying to am dram companies in the northwest area and wondered what I should charge them? I dont want to charge full whack rates because they are often short of money and I really want to built up my experience and portfolio.

It woudl consist of watching a few run throughs, designing the lighting, rigging, teching and opping. Would only be lighting cos they normally have a full orchestra. What d'ya reckon? I really have no idea. I dont want to do it for nothing but I dont want to rip them off either. I'd also like to be cheap enough for them to use me in teh future.

 

Tis very difficult.

Serious question (believe it or not - Im not being faceitious) but do people actually get paid for am dram ? Never actually done the am part so I dont know but I just presumed it was done as a hobby for the love of it.

Semi-pro admdram companies that perform in larger venues and make a bit of money from ticket sales sometimes hire a technician for the production week but normally this intails doing everything from designing, programming, rigging, opping, sound and even a bit of FOH work on performance nights!

Personaly I charge amdram groups depending on commintment and equipment requirements.

 

If I'm providing a full PA for a musical, FOH desk, bank of radio mics for each of the principles, plus 000's sound effects, plus remote band mic'ing, plus backstage video foldback I ask for a donation towards wear and tear of equipment, batteries blank media etc.

 

It it's a one week wonder, turn up with SFX on a laptop, design the show in the Tech, and run for a week - there my costs are so low that I don't normaly ask for anything

 

Does that make sense?
