moonlighter
I am currently in the process of planning a show in a new venue. As the lighting designer, I have several challenges ahead of me. The biggest issue I have now is that the theatre company is renting/purchasing 20ft x 10ft to 20ft x 30ft hand painted muslin drops. (7m x 3.5m to 7m x 10.5m) The venue's grid is 15ft (5m) from the stage deck. There is no room above the grid to fly anything in/out, so if I can, I'd like to create a Tumbler (Olio/Roll Drop). I have searched the forum, and the image that was available in 2004/2005 is no longer available. The images I have found on-line are rudimentary at best, and do not show any of the rigging. Maybe I'm missing something... If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. Ian R. jonathanhill
Tumblers are difficult pieces of kit to manufacture as they have to be straight across their length to operate properly. An old school Master Carpenter or a good scenic workshop should be able to make them, but I would surmise that it will not be cheap. As an aside, why is the LD sorting out the set? moonlighter
Tumblers are difficult pieces of kit to manufacture as they have to be straight across their length to operate properly. An old school Master Carpenter or a good scenic workshop should be able to make them, but I would surmise that it will not be cheap. As an aside, why is the LD sorting out the set? Unfortunately I do not have access to any old school Master Carpenters or good scenic workshops... Hence the request for a drawing... As an aside: I may be a lighting designer, but I always look to learn new things. I hav found that sometimes understanding how rigging works, how scenic pieces are put together, etc, can help me put together some good designs with few fixtures. Shez
I was going to start a new topic but this question fits rather neatly in here...Does anyone know of any suppliers of the actual tube used for these kinds of drops? A friend of mine works at an am dram venue who have several of this type of drop (tube stays at the top like a rollerblind) but a couple are in need of replacement. I believe in the past they've used the inner tube from swimming pool covers, mainly because a previous member worked in that industry. Are there any companies out there who still specialise in this particular technology? Thanks for any suggestions.
the kid
Lancelyn in oxford can supply the actual drops. From what I understand they can supply them in differnt sizes. I assume Shez they can supply JUST the tube as well.
