smalljoshua
First of all. It's good to see that you have already chosen the software. There are a lot of Topics on here about USB-DMX interfaces have a search using the Google box at the top of every page. Josh
tom_the_LD
Virtual Controller 2 works with the interfaces provided by Daslight and with a computer only. It’s compatible with DVC2 512 and DVC2 GOLD interfaces only. Taken from their website. It is also worth noting that the interface you are buying isn't of the highest quality, so if you ever do decide to do it as more than a hobby, you will need a better interface. peternewman
Its very unlikely it will work with the Daslight software. These companies usually give the software away free, so you can practise and try it out, and just charge their money to cover development costs on the hardware, so if you could buy another companies hardware and use it with their software, they wouldn't get any money. The exception is generally freeware stuff such as Freestyler, and Chamsys Magic Q is also very open to other hardware. Check the Wiki for more information or search, as we've covered this before. sleah
Sorry can't answer your question ;) But do beware, these cheap devices do not conform to full DMX standards (it actually admits to it on the ebay link :** laughs out loud **: ) so you may experience problems depending on what you are trying to control. You should be OK with dimmers, but will experience problems with devices such as lasers. Good Luck! Why not email Daslight and ask? :) :** laughs out loud **:
poridge
thankyou very much for the info so far. just to confirm there isnt realy any "universal" DMX controllers on the market atm. I may just have to hold off a while and save up. could anyone suggest any cheaper yet simmilar software?

The ebay link even lists some software you can use!! Why not do a quick google for 'Free DMX Lighting Sotware'?
smalljoshua
Have a good old :) for MagicQ. It is a very powerful piece of software and is totally free. It works with a wide range of Dongles including Enttec USB-DMX pro which comes highly recommended and it is based around standard ways of working so it will be easy to move from this to a different desk. tlc
Freestyler works very well with the Enttec Pro dongle. Its worth the extra for the pro version in my opinion. Have used this with several other software options , never had any real problems. (except of course for the proprietry locked out software keyed to own brand dongles). niclights
According to your other thread you have an existing lsc maxim. While I am not familiar with the consoles, they do look very capable. I would seriously question whether you will find any PC based solution easier to use.I think you will find it fiddly, awkward and far less practical. Additionally, if you intend to continue to run generics on the existing console then you have two controllers to worry about and this is never easy, even for the most experienced op. Tomo
I'll second the opinion that you should try to learn the Maxim. I find it hard to believe it's as bad as you said in the other thread! LSC would have gone out of business if nobody could use their consoles. You should contact the company that did the install and ask about training for the console. They will definitely be able to either provide training directly or pass you on to someone who can train you. Most console training courses are pretty cheap (<£50) if not free, particularly if you've bought one.
dmxlights
The OP of this said in the other thread that the school bought it and own it. If the USB interface is for himself I would go for the velleman USB to DMX. see link belowhttp://www.velleman.be/ot/en/product/view/?id=354968 I have used this interface for 2 years with freestyler and alot of diffrent dimmer packs to moving heads and LED cans with no problems and I have used a mixture of them as well. If you live in the uk look in maplin for it as you should be able to pick it up for under £60.

gyro_gearloose
Be careful which version you buy though. There are both kit and pre-built versions of the interface. Only buy the kit if you are confident in your soldering and electronics abilities.
dmxlights
Gyro, Thank you for saying that as I forgot to point that out well do alot of work with electronics I have the kit but I had not got the time to make it up then I bought the built version as I needed in a very short notice and have not had any bother with it. I worked every time I went to use it. It even comes with sample of code so you can write your own software.
