Dodgecaliber
Hi all, I've offered my help to work on a charity gig in early August. The press have given it really good publicity so far (See here: http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/display...2486351.0.0.php ) however, they are still short of some kit. The event is taking place in St Andrews at the square in Glasgow on August 2nd. They have been very generous and given the venue for free to the youngsters hosting the event. They have also had sound, security and deck offered for nothing. However, lighting is still a problem..... Its a lot to ask, however I would appreciate a helping hand from any techs or companies anywhere in the UK willing to lend a hand on this one. Full news, tv and flyer plublicity will be given along with any advertising they wish. Im in need of some dimming and some floods for the floor to be focused onto the roof. Im not going to beg for movers, LED bars or consoles, but anything I can get for them would be magic! Please also note that the kit will be rigged and operated by professional techs, not students or school kids. I know begging is common here on the BR, never thought id ask for freebies myself, but at the end of the day its for Cancer Research, something which I hold dear to myself, and im sure a lot of other people here too. Im doing my bit and anything anyone can do would be fabulous. Cheers folks :** laughs out loud **:

Ta for that, I know your in the IOW, however it is possible to travel, otherwise Im sure they can pay the costs of sending and returning the kit. What exactly do you have? johnhuson
Ta for that, I know your in the IOW, however it is possible to travel, otherwise Im sure they can pay the costs of sending and returning the kit. If they can afford the costs of transporting equipment to and from the Isle of Wight then how come they can't afford to hire from a local company? The costs of a courier to collect and return the equipment from the IOW to Glasgow will be greater than the cost of hiring a basic rig from a local company for a one nighter. Approaching a local hire company and asking for a bit of discount is a much easier method than trying to blag for free.
ChazHS
What exactly do you have?Plenty of dimmers, some Robe 250 ATs, Abstract VRXs, PAR 64s, 1kW floods etc.
Dodgecaliber
Ive contacted several companies and friends, Im just looking up all the different options avail. Access to a van is no problem, so dependant on the cost it might be easier and cheaper than hiring locally.
bruce
Access to a van is no problem, so dependant on the cost it might be easier and cheaper than hiring locally. Are you serious? take a van to IoW from Glasgow. Drive it back. Do the job. Return the kit. Drive back. That's 1800 miles. Apart from anything else, you're talking about 500 quid for diesel alone! smalljoshua
You're still looking at lots of money for a courier too. Ask around the local hire companies. Go to their bases local to you and ask them to do a deal in exchange for an advert in the program/website/anything else. Its probably going to end up cheaper if you collect/return yourself too. Rob_Beech
That's reasonable Paul. I remember the last time I took a band over there in my van. 6 people, LWB Sprinter, and a 8ft Box trailer. £360 for the return trip. Tip of the day, never do a gig on the IOW unless the client is paying all ferry costs. Tip number 2, don't let some cowboy agency in the Midlands who never pay you even close to on time tell you it'll only be £100 or so, and thus put £100 on your price. It isn't £100 for THAT vehicle. /rant.
PhilB
Would love to help but distance is still a factor!!! I agree with most on this post, ask around local hire companies.... most should jump at the chance on free publicity... I would!! good luck! oli
Black Light, Northern Light, Tower, Queen Margaret University, RSAMD, Citizens theatre, Traverse, Lyceum etc etc...all these places are local and will usually give a good deal, especially if there is free publicity involved. Put together a decent proposal and go after the Business Development Managers of each company...even if you get some lights from one and dimmers from another it is all good!! paulears
Hire companies rarely generate business from doing freebies - all that happens is that you get everyone asking for the same deal, including people who previously paid for theirs!. You then get accused of not supporting charities, and worse still, if asking for basic expenses only - get accused of ripping off a charity. I now support things I feel strongly about - and anything on the shelf is available, as is my time. However, I never turn down paying jobs in favour of freebies, and make sure they know that it's a loan as long as no paying work comes in for that item. I give my time free, but if they want people, they have to pay - I don't ask other people to do freebies because I am. Personally in this case, if the event is worthwhile supporting, the local companies will. Advertising and publicity won't sway them, the cause will - if they are that way inclined.
