Strand 200 24/48 Console

I'm having a spot of bother with a Strand 200 series 24/48 console.

The unit is rebooting, randomly, during shows. The symptoms are that the desk LCD backlight goes off, the unit beeps a couple of times and then powers up again and carries on. When this happens, the lighting rig goes dark for around a second before resuming where it left off. Fortunatley this reboot doesnt seem to corrupt the scene memory.

This doesnt appear to be down to the incoming power - the LED on the PSU remains lit and a substitue PSU also suffers from the same issues. I'm concluding that this is a dry joint issue inside the desk - also, the frequency of reboot seems to increase as the desk gets warm.

Before I start openning up & getting out the iron ... has anybody else had a similar issue with these desks and can offer some pointers as to where to look? I'm more than happy with the iron inside the desk but do know that intermittant faults can be a bugger to find and correct!

Given the symptoms, and the temperature-related increase in frequency of occurence, my money would be on the solder joint holding the power connector onto the PCB - either a dry joint, or a fracture caused by physical stress on the connector. I'd make that the first line of investigation, if I were you.

I have had a similar problem with the 24/48 desk I use. When we had the problem, the whole rig died and the desk shutdown during a rehearsal (cue the producer starting to moan...)

We never managed to figure out what caused the problem as the desk re-booted by itself after we had switched everything off and on again.

The desk had been on for the majority of the day but apart from that we never had a clue what caused it. We're just careful now and hope for the best.

Sorry this doesn't help....

Quite a different beast, but we had the same in an LCD computer screen. It behaved as if the power supplied was not enough and it kept restarting. Upon opening it up, we discovered an electrolytic capacitor had some dark fluid on its top.

Replaced that and all is well. Works as new!

I've had problems with the plug-in PSU cutting out due to thermal stress. I think they're under-rated for the job. Replaced mine with a generic one from Maplins and everything was fine. Of course, you don't get the locking connector option, but that's not a huge issue.

Thanks for your suggestions & ideas guys.

I've discovered & read other threads on this forum that suggest others are having this problem. One other poster is also suggesting the PSU, although I have to confess I thought I'd eliminated it. I'll have to re-visit the PSU - methinks running the desk of a bench power supply and keeping a close eye on it is in order. Failing that, I think its time to start dry joint hunting.

I'll keep you posted.

Have had the exact same problems with a 200 24/48 however the fault seemed to come and go.

Have never been able to replicate the fault in the workshop, last used the desk just before xmas and did a 3 day show flawlessly...

Will be interested to see if the PSU fixes the problem....
