All,

I am doing a dissertation on 3 Dimensional video and Super high definition television (mainly Supher Hi-Vision from NHK), the technology behind it and the likelihood of it becoming used in broadcast on a permanent basis. Does anybody know of any sources I could use for this dissertation as there is very little out there that is of any use to me, I have a very useful book and a few websites I know of, however I really need more sources. Any other books, magazine articles or people to contact in the field that have a knowledge of this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Could you please complete the very short poll attached to this post and feel free to comment on your thoughts and opinions.

Thank you very much

Richard Gilbert

Based on my experience, I would say you are asking the wrong question (to this audience, at any rate).

Working in the corporate AV market, I observe that most shows are happy enough with 1024x768 resolution images, at least to the extent they aren't going to pay for anything better. There are a few exceptions, but in general we haven't arrived at HD yet! Sure some shows do require it, and for future-proofing it is worth considering HD is an option within, say, a permanent installation. However, in our hire market there is not the demand. For example, sometimes I work in a London venue with an installed HD projector, and have regularly not had need to run it at 1080p even when there would be no additional cost implication!

However to actually deal with your question in the only area that I see that it applies - in the home entertainment market - I don't see why SHD is neccessary. But then I'm the sort that doesn't see why HD is neccessary at home! I would be quite happy to just have my five analogue TV channels on my 14" portable - though I'm not enough of a dinosaur to suggest we go back to monochrome! Whilst it does look better, is the increase in quality actually of any use?

On the other hand, I would compare 3DTV to colour/B&W, as an area that there is a functional benefit to the technology - it actually does something different, rather than a marginal* improvement in image quality.

Just my random thoughts!

*Okay, in "ideal" conditions the improvement in quality is distinct, but in most domestic environments, I'm not so sure.

With the lack of bandwidth available in over-the-air systems, SHD and 3D are not likely to become mainstream, due to the small number of channels which would be able to take advantage of it.

I see a more likely development being SHD/HD "anytime" viewing, in conjunction with fibred up homes, and basically a PC based set top box being used to watch programmes how and when the public want.

I don't see much of a future for 3D - I don't believe it is something which will enhance the viewing, except in a small number of documentaries and films, and is more of a novelty thing than practical.

I was having this conversation with some people at work, and I cant remember any of the websites we found, we discussed. But I will try and find out.

BUT there are several companies out there who will supply 3d kit in various forms. One I do remember supplies to oil companies which actually creates what seems to be almost a hologram (all I remember is that they MIGHT be based in Oxfordshire.

On that front I cant be much help but I do suggest looking on youtube for wii 3d there is an amazing videoof how to use your wii as a 3d video.
