Yamaha O1V96VCM Vs Yamaha LS932

Hi All,

I am specifying new kit for a secondary school and looking for a new digital desk for live work.

Do you have a need for a digital desk? Would it not be better to buy a (bigger) analogue desk as they will teach students more about sound due to the linear nature of the sound path than to buy a 'black box'?

Something with VCA's and scene recall?

Sorry to add another desk in but it may be worth looking at the Roland M400? I know some pro install companys that are saying it is a better control service than the LS9

Colin

I would also suggest taking a look at the Roland M400.

I personally prefer them to the LS9 as the interface is simpler and quicker to operate, although the LS9 is a good desk for the money!

Hi All, Sorry for the delay in response..

In my previous post what I meant to say was that the LS16 has 16 mic inputs and a further 16 inputs on the second layer. Utalising the second 16 with mic inputs was the question. I can only see Yamaha add-on cards which add 8 inputs (I assume mic level, Phantom swichable per chan, etc) I want to avoid external a-d's as pre amp levels will be have to be controlled from the A-D not the LD9 and therefore cannot be snapshot and recalled. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

At first glances, the Roland, A&H look expensive. And the full usability of the Mackie needs to be investigated. As was said, you never see Mackie on a tech rider, or if so, only in the negitive sense... The UI of the Mackie does look nice though..

On investigation I think I can probably get an LS9-16 + 8ch of A-D + proper case with dogbox for under 5K..

On the digital v analogue debate: I have a range of analogue desks which I can use to establish mixing and signal path principles with the young cohort.

Many thanks for all contributions on this..

Teaching your students to use an LS9 is likley to have more longterm benefits than teaching them to use an 01V96.

The LS9 uses a variation on CentraLogic, Yamahas latest method of console interaction, where as the 01V still uses a slightly modified operating system developed for the original 02R over a decade ago. CentraLogic forms the backbone of all the new breed of Yamaha consoles and is also what the soon-to-be-released PM2D will be based on.

If you want your students to learn something that will put them in good stead for the futrure, I would recommend the LS9 regardless of practical I/O considerations.

In the past when I've bought Yamaha digital stuff I've managed to get some good pricing from AC Lighting (or, I guess, AC Entertainment Technology now), particularly if I was bundling some other bits and pieces like expansion cards or whatever. It's a couple of years since I've dealt with them but it might be worth a phone call.
