lighting for an exhibition: LED's

Recommended Posts

We are doing a couple of expo's over the next two months, and having just bought some LED lights for another purpose, I thought that it would make sense to buy some pro lights over the tiny one's that we could pay through the nose for that light up our banners.

I don't really "do" lights, so any help is greatly appreciated.

I imagine that some led par56's would work well, they need to work through a 13a socket, not draw a lot of power, and not produce too much heat, as both NEC and Excel are already quite hot.

Can you set lights to randomise the colour so that the banners always look different, or is it a case of without a little mixer that on is on, and that is it?

Cheers

Well with heat and power you're fine with the LEDs. One of the massive advantages of LED being that they draw little power and give out little, if any, heat.

Most LED cans have dip switches at the back for setting the DMX address, these also double up as choosing which 'stand-alone' modes to have the cans in. The cans we have allow you to change the colour of the light between red, green and blue and also allow sound to light.

To get the best use it's probably worth getting a small DMX controller though.

Most of the cheap cans have a stand-alone continuous colour scroll type option with some degree of control over speed, but I don't know of any that allow setting of a single colour without controller. All other aspects of these fixtures have been dealt with at length elsewhere here.

You can get LED PARs to do single colours on the dip switches. As well as chases, sound to light and of course DMX addresses.

It would be useful to the OP if you stated which make/model since they certainly don't all do this.

Thomann's own brand do, specifically here.

LED pars are so alike yet so different in the details -especially the sound to light and auto chase responses -if available. You need to carefully study the model that you have and the models that you are considering. Check that they are similar in function and will do the job you need.
