revbobuk
Need to mount some lightweight column speakers to pillars in a church building - I think the columns are hollow, with a metal core; they are pretty big, around 60cm in diameter. I don't want to damage the column, and I want to be as unobtrusive as possible. Is it possible to use some kind of metal or synthetic strapping to hold a mounting plate in place? Who are the experts in this kind of field, so I know who to approach. Anyone had to do anything like this? Thanks!
ChazHS
Jubiliee clips around the pillars?
David Lee
Permanent install? If so - see if the chimney straps for TV aerials fit. Put cloth behind them to protect the pillar. Temporary install, Ratchet straps with cloth to protect from the ratchet mechanism. Jubilee clips - have to be very big to fit 60cm pillars!. Would need to know the weight of the speakers for a definite answer. (though lightweight would suggest that it won't be a problem) Who to ask - try local AV install companies if they have done such an install. Also Church authorities as to what they require you to do- it's their building and may have strict conditions as to what can be done to the structure. bruce
Jubilee clips - have to be very big to fit 60cm pillars!. You can buy that stuff in long coils, with the little screw bits separate. I'm sure RS used to sell it, but can't find it in the online catalogue. It's used by aircon and ventilation companies etc.
revbobuk
I guess the reason I'm trying to avoid drilling the fixings to the column is that I know that the column has an outer shell and an inner metal core, but I don't know the materials - if the core is steel or cast iron - and I don't know the depth and composition of the outer cladding, nor how strong it is. PET strapping would be ideal, as none of the speakers I'm planning on fitting (can't choose between the RCF and the NextTwo range at present) are more than about 3kg. But no-one seems to do this! I like the sound of Jubilee clip material! I have tracked down someone who does strapping to fix TV aerials to chimney stacks, but the ratchet is attached to an ugly steel bracket that I wouldn't need. Thanks for all the good suggestions so far, folks.
bruce
Now that I've got some paper catalogues, I've found it! CPC part numbers FN01016 (8mm - £7.26) and FN01017 (12.7mm - £9.32) Each contains a 3m length of band and 8 of the screw things. http://cpc.farnell.com/productimages/farnell/standard/42408011.jpg
