NatFox
Dear all, After receiving so much help from the blue room members whilst hunting down a rocking horse, I was wondering if anyone has any advice with another find. I have been ringing around trying to hire/borrow a working mac book pro for one scene in a show I am working on for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts next month. The Laptop is used to show a video on, so it will have to be in full working order, speakers that work and enough battery to survive at least twenty minutes on stage without being connected to the mains. I am planning on contacting Apple but hear they are very precious with their laptops which is understandable. Has anyone had to source a similar prop? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you, Natalie
iamchristuffin
1 - Try eBay. I have seen a couple go for very little beacuse they were missing some keys, or something else really trivial. 2 - Could you 'dress up' a normal laptop to look like a Mac? 3 - Failing this, I'm sure there must be someone at Mountview with a Mac? if you offer them some beer/bill money, they might lend it to you? adamcoppard
Second most of that. It's also very unlikely Apple will lend you one, they get very touchy with gear etc.Dressing one up may work, and, why does it have to be a MacBook Pro, and reason? And the new unibody laptop, or an older version. How much are you looking to spend?
mooly
If you have the budget then hireintelligence (google them!) do hire macs, but they are not cheep! Maybe they would be more willing to lend one to you for a note in the program... if not the beer option is always worth a try! But make sure you are insured against any accidents that might occour. I would offer my macbook for beer, but if it needs to be a pro! (I also have an orange clamshell ibook if you need a retro look!) Jack
bjkered
Use an Oridinary Black Laptop and Stick a BIG APPLE LOGO on the case. All you ever see in Films with Product Placement is the CASE and BIG Apple Symbol BET you know one will see the difference from the audience
NatFox
Dear all, Thank you for all your replies, all very useful. As we all suspected, Apple couldn't help me. So we are trying to find someone who will either lend us theirs or as many of you said, make a laptop look like a mac. Thanks for all your advice! timperrett
Give Complicite a call - they have working one which was used as a prop on their recent production 'A Disappearing Number' - you never know, they might lend it to you for the run. They also have additional batteries and external battery charger (great for those matinee/evening resets!). Speak to the office on 020 7485 7700 and they might be able to help an educational establishment such as Mountview.
Blaize110
Given the time scale this may be pushing it however have you thought about one of these "Free MacBook" sites? The usual problem with them is that you can never get enough friends to sign up as referrals. However if you have a whole cast who are willing then it may be possible. Many people are sceptical of these kind of schemes however http://www.exceem.co.uk (forum all about these kind of sites) has a whle thread on "I got my free stuff". I am currently signed up for quite a few and should be getting my free ipod shuffle soon. I can therefore say that there is almost always an offer to complete (each person needs to complete an offer) that is free. I took a 2 week DVD trial, took out 2 DVDs then cancelled it without paying a penny. Anyway, just a thought.
