Best general use speaker

Whats the best general use speaker/sub set for nightclub bits, conference reinforcements and general PA work? Needs to be smallish and below £800 a cab.

I'm thinking PS-8/PS-10s but was looking at some of the JBL offerings too, also considering the Martin Audio F12s, what do you guys think?

I'm much more accustomed with the PS-8/10, and they're very good speakers. The F12s are very good too though. I'm not really a fan of JBL.

What kind of scale are we talking about? What kind of scale conferences? How big is said nightclub? What kind of music?

The last thing to consider is, what amplifiers do you have/are you planning to buy, if you've thought about this at all.

Pair of Crown XTi 2000s, I've been planning a PS8/LS-400 system, 2 PS8s to 1 LS-400 bridged on the second amp. Hopefully to get 8 PS8s to be run from a pair of the XTi 2000s, and then 4 LS-400s from 4 more. Just wondered if anyone thought there was a better option to the PS8s for the £££.

I would almost always choose the PS10 over the PS8. Must they really be under £800 a box?

Also bear in mind the Nexos MUST be used with their controllers which are damn expensive.

From the sound of things, you may be better off with the Martins, but you still haven't said exactly what your venues are like in general, and what the source material for your nightclub situation is going to be?

Ultimately, you're going to struggle to find a system which can be both discrete and smart enough for conferences and loud and meaty enough for gigs/nightclubs.

The company I work for use a lot of PS-10s, are the PS-8s really inferior? I've heard that they are a very good box. I was planning to use them just for crowds up to 250 people, anything larger and a big-boy EAW rig is hired in, which I might use the PS system as monitors for.

Yeah I'm aware of the controller requirement, and personally I prefer it, if I dry hire the system then it means it can't be abused too badly!

Personally, I think the PS range is getting a bit long in the tooth now. And I would echo others in saying stay clear of JBL - just not clean enough compared to others.

As a completely different option, we use the Fohhn speaker range - as some others here will know. They launched a new model last year, the XT-10 which is also an 8" box with a 1" HF unit. Specs are pretty much exactly the same as the PS8 but can be driven by any amp of your choosing. With the XTi2000's you would have to watch though as they may be slightly too hot for these at 475 into 8 ohms.

In terms of the application, these (like the Nexo's) are great for conferences/small theatre and will handle music to a reasonable level although boxes of this size are better teamed with subs for this use. Taking them into a club/live music environment would be more tricky though and larger boxes with greater sensitivity and power handling would be better suited. That said, they work very well with a sub for jazz/acoustic bands and make rather nice DJ monitors.

Oh - and you'll get them within your budget.

...but newer designs can provide improvements.

I've personally had PS series boxes up against other products so my comments are based on listening. They are good...but I think there are better units out there.

Age wise, I've no exact idea but I would guess-timate at least 10 years. The PS-8 was a later release.

Sensitivity of 96db and a max SPL of 125db. Not huge in the grand scheme of things but pretty much on par for that size of box.

Similar ones.

Fohhn XT-10 (as already mentioned)

D&B E8

L'acoustic 8XT

(In fact the latter two exhibit a slightly higher SPL than the Nexo or Fohhn.)

HK CT 108

RCF TT08

To name but a few...

It would seem that 8" boxes have become a bit of a 'flavour of the month' with manufacturers at present.

Yeah, 125db is pretty loud, I'll be putting 475W into it so it will achieve the higher SPL rating. I think I may stick to the Nexo idea, but may get some F8s to go in for reienforcement.

Just as we had to look at how specifications were arrived at in the MC^2 thread, it's worth pointing out:

125dB is "Nominal Peak SPL @ 1m", nominal refers to Voice Decade (300 Hz - 3 kHz), continuous output may be up to 6dB below peak, and these figures are for the "recommended amp, processor and speaker.

This isn't a dig at Nexo, but it's worth knowing what the figures actually represent.
