Ben...
Can anyone recommend a good place to buy steelies in London? (ideally west London) (And before it's suggested, me paws are too soft and delicate (read flat and odd shaped) for me to trust to the vagaries of mailorder)
Tom
Can't suggest a West London shop but can highly recommend Dewalt steel toe cap trainers. I too suffer from delicate feet but was wearing my pair fro 12 hours a day almost straight out of the box. Got them from SJ Carter in Oval but they are pretty much available everywhere. gareth
<snip> ... highly recommend Dewalt steel toe cap trainers. DeWalt steelies are OK (I have a pair at the moment), but they're not the best ones I've ever had - they're fairly comfortable (though not excessively so), but the insoles are falling to pieces and wore into holes underneath my toes after only a relatively short time. The most comfortable pair of steelies I've ever owned were a pair of Doc Martens - not the typical black leather "DM" style ones, but the kind made from the softer brown leather with the cushioned top around the ankle. They were comfortable enough to wear all day straight out of the box - so much so that it was very easy to forget they had steel toe caps in them! Since they fell apart after many months of abuse I've tried three other types of steel toe cap footwear, and I have yet to find anything that's as comfortable to wear for long periods. The pair of Dickies that I had iimediately after the DMs came a pretty close second, though.
Guest lightnix
I bought a very comfortable pair of steelies by Grafters a couple of weeks ago, for the reasonable price of £35. Click here for a picture. I got them from: Mitcham Boot & Surplus Stores 72, Church Rd Mitcham Surrey CR4 3BU Tel: 020 8646 0114 Map here. Not quite West London, but close to a tram stop and fairly easy to reach; travel to Wimbledon to pick up the tram. Ask for Clive or Debbie. Martin
I recently bought a pair of the DeWalt trainers and have to say that they are the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I have ever worn. They seemed fine in the shop, (bought them in the local hardware store!) but after wearing them for a day my feet were really suffering. The insoles are cheap and very thin. Having changed them they are now okay, but I wouldn't recommend them. I too am looking for a new pair of steelies as my current pair are reaching the end of their life. TeeJay
Another place to get them is a shop on Charing Cross Road just down from Tottenham Court Road tube station. It's a camping shop to the outside world but it has a decent range of steel boots, shoes and trainers in the basement. the kid
You could always try a army surplus suppliers but I would suggest getting the US army ones rather than the British ones.
la grande homme
whatever you get, get some decent insoles with gel cushions on the heel and the ball of the foot (most sports shops do 'em) I used to really suffer with sore feet from my steelies until I invested in these and now even a porker like me can spend 12 hours in steelies and not need a day off the next day as me tootsies were too tender... :)
WiLL
'Gripfast' boots are steelies, they sell them in 'Millets' the camping store, their trainer one is quite comfy, well, as comfy as any steelie gets anyway.
kalmatthew
I find that my steelies are more comfortable than my normal shoes, and better for standing in for lon periods of time than my trainers, I have the gtipfast ones from Millets.
