revbobuk
Folks - does anyone know of companies who will supply custom furniture for AV installs? I know Canford do some, and will manufacture on request, but I was wondering if anyone had used other companies. I'm looking for fairly simple solutions - a desk with some racking space, with a lockable cover and door - that looks reasonably attractive (for church installs), and with a wood or wood effect finish. Any suggestions? It's not an easy thing to google, and some personal recommendations would be appreciated.
Aaron-Hill07
http://www.thomann.de/gb/studio_furniture.html Have a look there, I think I understand what you mean, there are a few things on there that I think would fit the bill.. Hope that helps
bruce
We've had a lot of custom lecterns built, for university use - generally with a lockable cupboard containing 19" rack strips etc. Even rise-and-fall tops for disabled use... We use various local (to us) joinery companies. Generally make from wood or mdf, with the top surface finished in marmoleum etc Try looking for a company (generally a one-man-business) that do good custom-built kitchens etc, not flatpack. revbobuk
Aaron - that's great, I'd forgotten that Thomann have furniture. Some of the desktop stuff might do, but I'm also looking at things that are a bit more 'furniture' like - there's an example here, which is lovely but far from cheap. Having the gear enclosed when not in use would be a plus.
Aaron-Hill07
Hmm, I can't really think of anywhere else. I can imagine the prices would be quite high as they aren't a product high in demand. If I think of or see anywhere, I'll let you know! Cheers!
paulears
Can't find much in the UK, but overseas we have things like this these people and also there are quite a few firms out there who make specialist furniture for video edit suits that look nice and could fit the bill. This American site also has some ideas that a local craftsman could produce for you.
pstewart
You could try Daedalian Furniture - there's not much on their website, but we've had lecterns for AV equipment, housings for plasma screens, and furniture for a video control room all built to order by them. Ian Cunningham
Might be worth having a look at Oxford Sound & Media Oxford Sound Don't know them well but saw their studio install at the Curve in Leicester this week (they did all the kit plus custom furniture) and it did look very good. The venue staff seemed very happy with the system Ian Cunningham
revbobuk
Thanks guys - I'll check out some of these too. Turning Leaf (mentioned in one of my posts above) look as if they have 'trade terms' too, so they're looking a strong possibility. Or I'll bolt a rack unit underneath an IKEA desk! Bobbsy
Probably not competitive with a Thomann rack bolted to an IKEA desk, but... For many, many years I used LUND HALSEY in Aylesbury for all my technical furniture needs. They'd take on anything from the most basic edit desk up to super-elaborate studio galleries, do a very good (and usually quick) job...and their prices weren't bad. As I say, not in the Thomann/Ikea league but highly recommended for any professional jobs. Bob
revbobuk
Bobbsy - that's a great link. And, I have to say, a rather nicely put together website - some clever use of flash there. I'll give them a call.

Andrew C
I've just had 30 19" racks built to my design by Witley Jones for very reasonable money. The price I get could well be 'special' as they do a lot for the school in boarding houses. The stuff I had made was flat-pack, but I did specifically want that so I could bodge the stuff around to make it fit over pipes and out of square rooms. peternewman
If you did want to go down the Ikea route, then the BESTÅ range is just slightly wider than a 19" rack, add a bit of wood to pad it out and some rack strip and you've got a very attractive rack, you might want to varnish it a bit too. :)
Simon Lewis
I know that Dan Dawson of Technical Stage Services has started offering custom furniture for their church installs. PM me if you need further information.
