allightstheway
Hi, I'm relatively new to this game and although I have lots of practical experience in general lighting, teching and stage management I would like to boost the cv with some qualifications/certificates of competance etc. I've been looking at a couple of the stage electrics courses, Elec in the Ents Industry etc and just wondered if these were worthwhile? Are they actually valued by employers and can anybody recommend any others? I did my degree in performance studies but did nearly all of the tech work myself including, for other students.Cheers. gareth
Have you thought about some more general courses, rather than theatre-specific? I'm thinking of things like First Aid At Work, getting your C1+E entitlement on your driving licence, tacho training, ladder safety, stuff like that. It all counts in your favour when you're looking for work, whether it's as an employee or as a freelancer - if, for example, you can drive a 7.5t wagon and another chap can't, it might just tip the job in your favour! If you already have an A level in anything similar you probably won't learn much, but if not then it's certainly worth having on the CV. I've since put some of my technicians through the same course (and their PAT course) so I must have thought it was OK! Stage Electrics are a respected company and training courses is now a staple part of what they do so any industry professional should feel better about you having been on one.I agree with Gareth, too, that general H&S, WaH courses etc are also good to have.
