jason.fallon
Hi all, I'm doing some pre-production on an amateur production of Rent. Just wondering if anybody knows the make and model of the black microphones that they use on the broadway show? Its more out of curiosity that anything else as I don't intend on buying another 20 headsets. Any ideas? Thanks Jason
Gareth Owen
Not sure what they use on Broadway but the last Westend production at the Duke of Yorks theatre used Zaxcom radios with Countryman E5 boom mics. Sebastian Frost was the sound designer and Dan Bailey (Blue Room Member) was head of sound. I beleive the production before that at the Prince of Wales used DPA 4065 boom mics - the non frame mounted predessesor of the 4066 - with Sennheiser radios. Chris Vass (now working for Stage Electrics) was head of sound although I'm not sure who actually designed it. If I had to make an informed guess I would speculate at Broadway using the DPAs. They are pretty much the standard for rock and roll theatre shows.

From looking at the countryman website, The ISOMAX headset looks very much like the mics used on the Broadway DVD. Will probably end up going with the 4066s seen as I have an abundance of them but nice to know nonetheless. Thanks Again Jason
dbuckley
used Zaxcom radios Thats an unusual choice. I know the film sound guys love Zax to death, but cant recall it ever being mentioned in a theatre context.....
Gareth Owen
Its the new thing rumour has it. As the Zaxcom are digital you can cram a whole load more channels in to a lot less space. Good preperation for the impending Ofcomm frequency deregulation apparently. They are currently in use on Flashdance Tour, Carousel Westend, West Side Story Tour, High School Musical Tour, and Little Shop of Horrors both Westend and Tour. They made their broadway debut on Sunday in the Park with George, again with Seb Frost as designer. Coutryman Isomax E6s are a great mic although I find you have to stick the long caps on them to get the crispyness you get naturally from the 4066. Speaking to a friend of mine who is working on High School, he was saying the reliability of the Zaxcom packs hasn't been great, they go through at least 1 pack a week from what he's told me. Didn't realise they were digital though, as you say good for the impending digital switchover. neil
Gareth Owen
I'm not sure how they do for reliability although High School is a pretty high pressure environment for a radio mic of any make. Lots of dancing, jumping, falling, sweating etc. The mics are going to take a fair bit of punishment.
