LED Parcans

Just a quick question really, probably answered on the forum somewhere else a number of times so if anyone could redirect me that would be cool. If there arn't any related threads, then I'll just ask away!

I was thinking of getting some LED PAR 64s from Thomann or somewhere simmilar, they are about £30 a pop and have onboard DMX and RGB mixing etc (although controlled by dipswitches, which I feel are items manufactured by satan). How bright are they? Are they suitible for uplighting/colour washes on items? Also what kind of quantity do you think I would need to do a reasonable number of things with? (Uplighting medium sized rooms, gentle wall washes etc.)

I think I'll probably get a butt-load of questions asked about my questions, but it's always interesting to learn!

Cheers.

To answer your question on how many, that really depends what you want to do. 8 is a really good number, 4 is workable too. A word of warning, these Stairville/Soundlab/Chinese fixtures are made with the cheapest components possible. Out of the four I first ordered one failed within minutes, replaced but another failed after several outings too. Not necessarily a false economy, they are pretty handy for bands, washing walls as you say (albeit in a choice of about 6 colours), and you can get your failures swapped under warranty most of the time but you get what you pay for.

There is a very comprehensive thread covering exactly what light output you get vs normal cans so won't go into that, but as a related note I find I have to frost mine otherwise certain mixes look splotchy too, especially against walls.
