Phono/RCA Split

Hi Everyone,

This is a very basic question I know, but I thought the BR would be able to help me out!

I have a computer with a soundcard which has one output, presented on phono plugs. I want this output to go to a mixer (Which doesn't have any direct outs, but has phono inputs) and also to another mixer/switcher type affair, as balanced audio on XLR (It's an installation).

If I make up a cable which has phono plugs into the soundcard, then has one cable running to the desk on phono, and another cable running into a pair of DI's via mono jacks, is that likely to cause any unforeseen problems? Ground Loops? Gain Problems? Terrible Hum?

Thanks

L

Assuming the XLR input mixer/switcher can handle line level ok, then I suspect I'd be tempted to do the split, but use pins 2 and 3 on the xkr, leaving ground alone and unconnected - using the balanced input and not using pin 1 shorted to pin 3. Either way, it won't do any harm to knock it up and test. Much depends on the exact combination you have. As the sound card has phone outputs, it does suggest it's a better class, designed for proper audio. Give it a shot!
