Yamaha digital desks and fader calibration problems

Having three Yamaha digital consoles (two M7's and n LS9) all still under warranty, we have been experiencing problems with fader calibration, and failure to recalibrate.

Whilst Yamaha have been fine with swapping these faulty faders under warranty, I was wondering how many others have experienced this problem or have I just been unlucky?

Obviously this issue brings in to question the long term running costs of these consoles.

Well, of the Yamaha mixers I've had long term experience of over the last 9 years (01, 02, 03, DM1K, DM2K), fader calibration hasn't been an issue. However, my experience of the M7 and LS9 has only been walk-up and rental--I've not encountered any problems on them but my time spent using them has been much more restricted.

One obscure thought: the only time I had any fader calibration issues at all, it turned out to be a static electricity problem (the designer for the show I was on "decorated" the mix position with plasma balls). I rather doubt plasma balls are your problem ;) but could there be some other common source of static...nylon carpets and central heating or something?

We have an M7CL and a LS9 - and I don't get the impression that the faders are of the same standard of the DM2000 for example - and I've noticed that some move slightly slower than others.

The latest LS9 software update slows the fader speed down to solve calibration and noise issues.

Hmmm, I use an 01v96 which has been running for 2 years with no real problems.

The calibration isn't perfect, even after recalibration the faders don't seem to go back to the nice even line that I created but as they are only 1-2mm off I've never thought it worth bothering with.

Is your calibration off by a lot more that this?

Whilst touring I have seen several different M7CL desks with badly behaved faders.

I have also seen it on the one and only LS9 that has ever been plonked in front of me.

A very rough, slightly generous to Yamaha and not slightly scientific calculation ( number of fader quirks I can remember / number of M7's I've seen in the last 4 months) would be that 1 in 5 desks have a fader fault.

Cheers,

Peter

Just out of curiosity how/where are the desks being stored and what is their typical usage/cycle?

Dom

Desks are stored in our warehouse in their flightases. Typical usage is on one nighter touring shows.

We don't have any LS9's or M7's (although two M7's are iminent) only 01v, DM1000's and DM2000's and in general we've only had a couple of fader problems one of which was when a can of coke ended up in a DM1000! Only other incident I can think of was fairly recently when one of our DM1000s had a fader that wasn't behaving and a recalibration sorted that out.

Only other time I know of fader calibration being done was when we upgraded to V2 software and this was part of the update process.

  • 1 year later...

The new dust free faders on the M7 are a massive improvement and something that will be replaced under warranty and often replaced out of warranty. The LS9's have these by default but I've known them to need attention from time to time.

Yamaha service department is absolutely fantastic, good set of guys and really helpful, can't recommend them enough. It'd be stupid to send one of their boards elsewhere for any work.
