Rigging qualification standard

Why is there no "standard" internationally recognized qualification specifically for the entertainment industry?

Everyone is running their own in house qualification and training there days but the problem is that it does not recognize a similar qualification attained from a rival company let alone another county, state or country. Why not agree on some sort of standard specifically designed around the nature of our industry. IRATA and all the other folk all train for industrial enviroments. As most people know our industry is unlike any other. Our chalenges are not the same as with the building trade, our stresses and preasures are a little unusual. Our greatest battle is always with time! Faster and ultimatly more dangerous and risky things are done for the sake of getting the show started on time. There are those out there who say safty first are right but how many of you have worked under threat of a ruined career from the satan worshiping beast of hell that can sometimes manifest itself in the personality's of the more discerning production managers and producers and directors out there. You are after all only as good as your last show.

I ask again... Why is there no "standard" internationally recognized qualification specifically for the entertainment industry? By standerdising and enforcing a qualification system you will not only improve the work safety standard but you will also keep the cowboys out and the rest of us safe onsite.

As far as international standards and legislation is concerned, it is hard to achieve between different countries with different approaches to health and safety and workplace legislation.

As far as IRATA is concerned, they deal with a different section of the industry - primarily rope access techniques.

As far as a nationally recognised scheme is concerned - there is one in the UK! (your profile does not state whether you are UK based?). The PLASA rigging certificate has the backing of the major rigging companies and training facilities in this country, and has 'certified' a number of "level 2" riggers already. There are discussions about this scheme being implemented in other countries, but it is unlikely (IMO) to be part of legislation per se.

I'm suprised that you haven't come across it?
