annebrodie
In Ireland, we have a ban on the smoking of tobacco in the workplace. As the theatre is a workplace (apparently!), we cannot use tobacco products onstage anymore. Cigarettes are no problem, because we can get herbal ones in the health food shops, but I'm now working on a play which requires the actors to smoke cigars. I went to www.herbalcigar.com, but my designer didn't like them because they weren't big enough. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas?!?
rudigure
Hey Anne, long time no see! this may be a stupid idea but have you thought about rolling the herbal stuff in Rizla liquorice skins. The skins are cigar coloured.
Guest lightnix
If you look around "certain shops" which supply "smoking accessories" (or just have a Google), you'll find a type of rolling papers called "blunts". These are king-size jobbies made from tobacco leaves - just like the skins of cigars. They're thicker than normal rolling papers, take a little practice and may need slightly wetting all over before use, depending on how dry they are - although some are sold in pre-fabbed tube form. Whether or not it'll be legal for you to use them (what with them being made of tobacco) is another matter. Avoid the flavoured ones, though - it might break the suspension of disbelief, if one of the cast lit up and it smelt of chocolate or blueberries ;)
adam2
Whilst I stand to be corrected, I thought that it was "smoking" that was banned and not just the "smoking of tobbacco", therefore I would expect the smoking of a herbal cigar to be just as illegal as a regular tobbacco one.Or are the regs different in Ireland? Andrew Edwards
I thought smoking as part of performance was allowed under the new regulations. (There are some conditions relating to rehearsals, AFAIK)The so called Luvvie loophole. Check with your local authority. Dot still smokes inside on 'enders! Drew. AFAIK it is up to each local authority to decide if they will allow smoking on stage/set; there is no absolute duty for them to allow it.
timtheenchanteruk
it is up to the local authority/building owner, the absolute max allowed is for the dress and performances, not any other rehearsals, also IIRC there has to be warning notices at public entry points to inform the audience of its use. (thats in England anyway)
