Steve Thomas
Got a New Years Eve gig, to about 350 people and the drummer has just discovered that he has left behind his 2 C1000s Overhead Microphones at a gig (fortunately still there!). For tonight only I have either SM58's or could use an AKG D112 just for some ambience. Any recommendations, as it will be not overly used?
Bobbsy
Use the SM58s...frankly I'd use them in preference to the C1000s but let's not start THAT topic again! Seriously, the SM58 won't be a bad choice--you'll probably be pleasantly surprised. Bob
nothingatall666
might get a bit more sound in to them if you take off the wind/spit/beer/food/other god knows what shield off just a thought
Killyp
Seconded. SM58 all the way. If it's in an indoor venue and you find you're getting quite a lot of feedback at the top end, try removing the ball at the end.

Bobbsy
might get a bit more sound in to them if you take off the wind/spit/beer/food/other god knows what shield off just a thought  Frankly I don't think the windshield will make much difference to levels--and getting enough level out of overheads is rarely a problem! However, if you do decide to do this for some reason, don't be tempted to do anything to tape the capsule in the shell....anything around the capsule will change the pickup pattern very much for the worse...and probably change the frequency response as well. SoLiEn
58 without a doubt.
berry120
Never used either myself, but again I'd go with the 58s. On a practical note, the 58s are probably lighter than the 112 (though I can't remember weights that easily) and so you shouldn't have any problems with stands drooping mid gig! Charlie Jeal
Got to be the 58s a d112 will still probably sound far too clicky on the kick even as an overhead
Rob_Beech
Clearly a bit late now but just to add, A 58 is NOT designed as an ambient mic, but will certainly do the job if pushed. Far better than a D112. Your drummer has done you all a favour by forgetting them. I bet it sounded better. Personally I'd sooner use a slightly worn and moderately scorched cardboard cut out or Terry Wogan's Aunt that a C1000 but as Bob says, lets leave that one be. Happy New Years aswell. Russ83
As others have said, SM58 if no condenser is available. Just for Rob:http://i41.tinypic.com/166k4m9.jpgI'll get my coat.
Steve Thomas
Thanks for all the input guys. Went with the 58 and was pleasantly surprised, and Rob you are correct I think my drummer did do us a favour by forgetting the AKG.....Now of to the search engine to find recommended overheads. Happy New Year to you all.
Rob_Beech
EM800's on a budget. Can't beat em for the money. It's one of the few things that goes against the "you get what you pay for" argument. To a point anyway. They're no 414 but they're a 15th of the price. Rob
daveh
Not knowing your budget I was going to suggest a pair of my favourites, AKG451s. However Rob's EM800's suggestion looks good and at 10% of the price of 451s.A Happy & Prosperous (hopefully) New Year to all Dave
Bobbsy
AKG 451s are my number one choice but not in the "budget" category. If your pockets aren't deep then the SE Electronics SE1A will be streets ahead of what you're using at a very affordable price. That said, I've not had a chance to play with Rob's EM800s and his recommendations are usually pretty spot on. Bob
