LX-Dave Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 I recently purchased a velleman USB > DMX interface kit [http://www.velleman.be/ot/en/product/view/?id=353412], and successfully assembled it. It works fine with the included test software and simple control app. But I cannot get ShowMagic SL24 [http://www.showmagic.com/index.php?page=products&model=1] to recognise the interface. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated - would love to use this for a show in new year, though I may have to stick to freestyle manual control :** laughs out loud **: thanks in advance, Dave PS - the interface comes with a *.DLL file, for use in writing your own control software, is there something I can do with this to get it working? PPS - Merry Christmas!
david.elsbury Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 The software will only work with a few specific interfaces, detailed in this document. From what I can see, your interface is not on the list. You will have to purchase one of the interfaces they say will work with the software.
KevinE Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Yep I agree with David. As far as I know there's no generic comms protocol for PC > DMX Interface, if the Velleman (being a sort of amateur unit) is not in the pull-down list then you're stuck...its unlikely that any commercial unit will use the same protocol. Maybe the software companies should realize the popularity of the Velleman and include it as does Freestyler?
smalljoshua Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 What is the DLL file called? It may be the case that it is the generic FTD2XX.dll that Sweetlight Dongle and OpenDMX use to inteface to the computer. Josh
Tomo Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 It may be the case that it is the generic FTD2XX.dll that Sweetlight Dongle and OpenDMX use to inteface to the computer.Which still wouldn't work, because that's just a USB>Serial converter made by FTDI.It says nothing about the bytes that need to be sent down that serial connection - that's up to the hardware/firmware in your box.
dbuckley Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 As ever, the old adage applies - first choose the software, then an interface the software supports.
gyro_gearloose Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Use MagicQ instead!! I'm in the middle of a panto run and I'm using a Velleman interface and MagicQ to control some Mac 500s. It works perfectly (well, apart from the 'issues' I had last week! See my previous post on the subject... All fixed now though, and nothing to do with my interface or MagicQ!)
