L.E.D lighting

I have just started to run a karaoke/disco.

I have also bought some L.E.D effect lights to replace my ageing twister 4's, vr8's, and vrx8's, all of which use either discharge lamps or standard 24v 250w lamps.

I now have, x2 acme impossi's, x2 marvels, and x2 KAM quadflowers.

The L.E.D's as I understand it last for thousands of hours, and I have tried them and they look just as good.

Is this the end for fixtures reliant on standard lamps?

There are various topics kicking around. There is one which compares the brightness of a CP62 with an LED PAR I believe. As well as various others where people express how 'each has their own use' - how cliché do I sound!

Not by a long shot! :) The reasons why, have also been spoken about in length, many times on here before! So don't be surprised if the Mods decide to close this one down rather sharpish..

While, all LED fixture rig's made up of budget/DJ brand kit might be an option (perhaps even ideal), for mobile disco/small pub like venue's. Its going to be a while before we in the entertainment industry as a whole, all give up our power hungry incandescent & discharge lamps!

Now before you say it, yes.. I know there's been at least one high profile touring act who've had a rig entirely made up of LED fixtures and there's many other tours & productions that are using large numbers of LED kit, but you've got to remember, it's all top of the line kit that uses substantially better quality LED's & circuitry than anything made by ACME or Showtec or Kam... Just look at my recent post in the GLP impression thread, there's a reason they cost upwards of £2K a unit!

Perhaps in a few years time we'll be closer to using LED source kit..

Of course, you have to remember that the system was all LED for reasons that were completely non technical, so quality and lumi...lumin..li..l....how bright it was were not top of the list.

I'm leaving this part of the forum now as I'm getting funny looks and starting to feel rather ill.

I think youve made a massive downgrade in equipment there

twister 4's are still in use across the land today and are brilliant effects

VR8 and later VRX are great and with the right controller can be used with the twister 4's to make an awesome show

£400 later you have a bunch of similar looking lights that dont do alot and put alot of funny round dots on the floor

I do still have these sound, I just choose to use the leds 'cos they weigh a lot less! :)

(loving these festive emoticons)

Also I have been gigging in restaurants, firm do's and such, some of which are quite small areas, and the dispersion of coloured dots is much wider, although as you say, it's not really a light show.

I used to use an abstract clubshow to control my abstract fixtures, it did look pretty good.

Mounting on a truss was not a quick job though.

Moderation: As someone put it - not another topic on the uses and abuse of LEDs. John - probably best to add any more stuff to one of the dozens of LED topics that seem to just drop off view new posts before someone starts another. In the meantime, I'm closing this one. Feel free to add to any of the others.
