Ynot Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Does anyone have any links to any online visualisations which look like (or could be manipulated to do so) a radar screen? Googling as I type, but if anyone knows of any such sites I'd be grateful.
david.elsbury Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 The last time I did this, I made (by hand, no less) 90 .jpg images, in photoshop, of a green "arm" sweeping around with a bit of an aftertrail, and put them all together in Premiere. When do you need this for? I can message my friend and see if he still has the file, if you like? It was a few years ago now. RegardsDavid
paulears Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I assume it is the sweeping line traditional style one you want, not the modern computer generated type - if you want modern, I can point you to a downloadable link for a working one that will load real data - the clever receiver box is expensive, the software that will run is free.
p.k.roberts Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Obviously there might be some copyright and quality issues to overcome, but Youtube certainly has some likely looking suspects.
cedd Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I'd love to help, but my "real" radar video is a little too sensitive to go handing out. The sites that provide realtime radar screens online may be a good way to go. I doubt that you'd see a proper "sweep" though, simply dots moving around a screen. What period are we looking for here? Anything modern and you really won't see the green line spinning around. Most modern radar is disseminated by a PC first before being displayed on screen. This means the days of staring into a CRT are gone, it's all flat screens with nice computer maps. Are you not able to do something crafty with powerpoint? I'm thinking a line with half of its' length green, the rest black, placed so that the join in colours is central to the screen. Then get the whole thing to spin slowly and give it a black background. Then add the occasional "blip" that moves around.
Andrew C Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Surely the "crafty" way to do this would be to hook a sig gen to an old fashioned 'scope and create your own sweep? I've no idea what you'd need in the way of inputs but I'm sure a telecoms engineer might have an idea or two? :** laughs out loud **:

I've no idea what you'd need in the way of inputs but I'm sure a telecoms engineer might have an idea or two?:** laughs out loud **: :PTo be perfectly honest it's been YEARS since I even switched a 'scope on, let alone did anything 'crafty'...! ;) To answer the questions, it doesn't have to be any specific 'period' as such - just thinking of an addition to the panto main set. Looking for a couple of likely looking screen graphics options for inside the submarine (and before anyone says "It's sonar for underwater" I know - but 'radar' probably represents itself better in many ways to the great unwashed... :huh:And after all - it is panto... I did think about powerpoint etc, but my approach is if someone's already got something that will do the job simply, why re-invent the wheel...! Thanks so far...
charl.ie Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Would something like this do? It's only $3, but I could dust off the old version of flash I have around and make you up something more customised. There are probably tools about to convert it into a more usable video format, and the flash editor will export to several different ones. Edit: Or you could just directly use the preview file here. Although unfortunately, the flashing dot gets out of sync with the sweeping arm and the arm itself looks a bit off.
themadhippy Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 You could alway download Ubuntu and use the sonar screensaver
the kid Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 You could alway download Ubuntu and use the sonar screensaver In that case there is bound to be a free screensaver somewhere that is radar.
MarkPAman Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 This one may be worth playing with. Lots of bits you can turn on & off, including sonar pings & whale song! I don't (yet) know how long the free one gives you before a nag box comes up, but it's not a bad price anyway.

Thanks A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on. Would something like this do? DavidLee Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 A simple non-electronic solution would be a lightbox with a circular aperture and a motor rotating a green disc of colour with a radial slit cut out. Would only show the sweep without any returns - but it is panto - and from 30 feet... David
Ynot Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 Is this any good ?Another possibility...(I was going to ask if you had anything in your Arkaos 'box' that might suit....):** laughs out loud **:
