in your opinion, is d&b Q series more cross hirable on EP5 or NL4?

many (maybe the majority) of the bigger hire co's stock is all EP5.

some people have subs on EP5 and tops on NL4. some have Q-sub & Q1 on EP5 and Q7 on NL4.

but what do you think is the most common? or the most useful?

thanks

ps. we've already had long threads about sense drive... so lets not go there..

As a frequent Q user, I find that being on NL4 means I can use my existing stock of NL4 cable.

If I hired in cabs with EP5 on, then I would also have to hire a shed load of cable, or a load of adaptors.

Local company to me (which you know very well....) has all the cabs on NL4 apart from their B2's which they supply adaptors for.

Most common - Don't know. I only use one company.

Most useful (well.. to me) - NL4

Well, when in the UK I was an infrequent (but happy when I did it) Q user...and I also preferred NL4 for the same reason. I'd either be wishing to use my own stock of speaker cables which were mainly NL4 or (once) slotting them into a pre-wired theatre which had NL4s pulled into the speaker positions.

Either way, the NL4s were easier for me.

All our Q1 and Q subs are on EP5, all our Q7 are on NL4. We did have a mix of subs (8 on EP5, 4 on NL4) but decided to standardize on EP. Most of our D12's are on ep5, all our D6's are NL4. Since buying E12's and D6's to replace our E9's (that went into an install) we send out D6's to run Q7's. There is a box of adapters by the Q subs. As we already had a stock of ep5 for our C4/C7 boxes we decided to keep down that route.

entec, encore, dobsons are EP5 (mostly)

PMI have subs on EP5 & tops on NL4.

what about wigwam, orbital, warehouse?

So what are we saying guys?

You hire a box from a company and you have to hire a cable separately?

Are these the same companies that often want £40 a box per day for Q?

The way I see it, you shouldn't have to worry because you hire a box and an amp and you get the necessary cable and/or adaptors with it. If you don't its a poor job isn't it.

I appreciate that isn't the initial question, but replying to the bit about "not having to hire a cable". Surely not..... surely we don't charge for cables when going out WITH a box and amp?

I often don't know how much cable I am going to use. Some theatres for example need silly long runs because you have to go round the world the other way to reach the desired destination in a safe and neat manner.

If I said to the hire company "I'll take 500mtrs of cable with those 8 boxes I've hired" then there is going to be a surcharge.

I already have the stuff made up, labelled up so everyone knows it's mine, and at the end of the job it all goes back in my trunk rather than having to count whos is whos.

It's just habbit I suppose.

Now that depends on which company you are using. And 500m with 8 boxes just equals a whole lot of signal loss to cable to me :P

How do you think that hire price is calculated?

I think you missed my point. of course the number of boxes will be the main makeup of the cost, but what I mean is you'd normally go out to hire a complete system, with cable runs suitable for the job of course, and you get the hire price. my point was you need to make sure you know you're hiring a system, if it is indeed a system you want. that said I'm rather tired, so I could be ranting somewhat.

No, not necessarily.

I have 8 F12's that I regularly use as wedges. Say I need another pair the I just want 2 boxes. I don't need amps., I have them. I wouldn't need cables as I have them. but if I DID need cables. Surely the hire company isn't going to charge me an extra amount for a couple of cables.

Point taken, sorry. It's not necessarily the case as standard though. I'd say about half my customers do hire just the boxes, no cables, and the other half want a complete system. But no, we don't charge for cables in this instance either.

all of our db cabs are ep5 apart from b2's which are ca com and our e3's which are nl4. We do however stock adaptors for clients who request them. Whenever we sub in extra boxes they are always ep5

We have recently bought Q-series & D12s and opted for EP5 for several reasons.

(1) it seemed "wrong" to invest in a system at this level and not be able to make use of all it's design features (i.e. Sensedrive), albeit the difference over the 20m distance we typically cable may or may not be audible.

(2) Our nearest d&b rental house has Q-SUBS on EP5, so keeps things simple if we need to hire in more boxes.

(3) I'd rather make up a couple of EP5 to NL4 adaptors to run say E3s for a small job, than be cursing having bought D12s on NL4 and wanting to run B2s off them at a later date.
