ontheone Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I run the PA in a 200 seat arts centre. We have Martin H3/subs/QSC/A&H 32 channel desk running 6 monitor mixes. I have been lucky enough to get funding (approx £6k) to buy new monitors. I would be grateful for any suggestions re powered/unpowered, brand etc. Most of the stuff we do is folky/rootsy, ie not full on rock stuff. The stage is roughly 7m x 5m. Thank you!
Killyp Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I can't say I know specifics of pricing, but I'd say you could look at a small d&b rig for that cost. Others on the forum who know more about d&b's kit could say more though. d&b is the best kit I've used.
Rob_Beech Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 One of the obvious suggestions must be to stick where you are and go with the Blackline boxes. F10's or F12's are a favourite amongst alot of people, myself included. Did you require amps for these aswell or do you have suitable amps already? To stick in the budget side of things, have alook at the GX5 amps from QSC, you appear to have QSC powering the front of house system. Ignore the M controllers for the box, they do nothing worth while to the box. F12's can generally be picked up from the right place at around the £1000+vat mark new for a pair. So say, 4 pairs, 4 amps, some cabling. And maybe a lone S18 as a drum sub? Possibilities are endless. Rob
themadhippy Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 The martin le 1200 are a pretty nice sounding box ,small and compact but still able to handle ROCK if required.Should be able to get 6 for your budget if you haggle a bit
Rob_Beech Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 not necessarily with 3 amps though. Agreed though, they are a superb box. If you DON'T need amps, you could have a go at bagging half a dozen ex demo le 2100's. They DO DO everything but are bi-amp so quickly gets through amp channels

They are indeed very nice, but you have to think about how much they cost? I wouldn't be surprised if they were around £2000 a cab
Furryface Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Always found the Turbosound TFM-212 was ideal for folk/jazz/acoustic stuff. Its a passive 2x 12" + 1", nice and low profile which should be taken into consideration given the size of the stage and if your front row is close to the stage. SHould work in your budget with amps. Otherwise you could look at other more multi-purpose products such as the Martin F12, Turbo TXD-12M, Logic ML12 etc which would all meet your requirements and be around budget. None of the above require separate DSP or x-over. FF

Rob_Beech Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 1x10 may not be enough for your needs, plus you need the relevant processing for the nexo boxes which adds to the cost. Nice sounding boxes but if you're looking at 10inch then I'd recommend the Turbosound TQ310 over them any day of the week. It's all subjective of course. Ryan, how does that help anyone? The D&B wedges are nice, and are a good and valid suggestion, to say you wouldn't be surprised if they didn't cost £2000 doesn't really help. In reality you WILL get 6 MAX wedges for your budget, thought whether you'd be able to get any amplification within that budget or not depends on how good a deal you can get. Amps don't need to cost a fortune, a certain LARGE hire company uses TA2400's for powering their MAX wedges. The reason they were suggested was probably because they'd looked at those and found suitable prices and realised they were in budget. In reality, D&B is no more expensive than Turbo, Martin, EAW etc. It's just 2nd hand deals are hard to come by as there is less of it about. Also, the amplification for all but the MAX boxes is not cheap and rather restricting.
Shaggy Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I've done a few gigs in a similar sounding venue with Martin F12s, and I do think they are good wedges, they certainly work well in this situation although I've never had to run them at full on rock levels. I've used PS10s for some reasonably loud stuff and kept bands happy, they are a nice sounding box, IMO better sounding than the F12 but I believe they are more expensive when you factor in the controller. I don't think there is a clear cut winner here and lots of people have mentioned sensible choices, I think it's just going to come down to your personal preference.
tolley1466 Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Sorry Rob I jumped to the mark without thinking!! But when I think D&B it just reminds me of really expensive speakers.I personally think the Martin F12's are quite good, I've used them before and they can handle a good amount of Kick, guitar, basically a good amount of power? Good luck in your search! And sorry Rob.
