SYB
Hi, I'm looking in putting on an event on the 1st week in June next year, I want to put some rear projection screens outside, the event starts at 6pm and finishesat 1am. I just wondered if any would have- 1. Thoughts on using projection outside in daylight 2. At what time in the evening would it start to be usable 3. Type of projector you suggest I hire. 4. Any extras I can do to make the picture viewable as early as possible Thanks in advance
dunk_1984
Are LED screens not an option? These photo's were taken on an incredibly hot and bright day and the screens could be seen clearly throughout. (the phasing lines are just the camera.) http://www.upload3r.com/serve/091208/1228850580.pnghttp://www.upload3r.com/serve/091208/1228850591.jpg

I just wondered if any would have- 1. Thoughts on using projection outside in daylightPointless. 2. At what time in the evening would it start to be usable When the sun has gone down then the ambient light will fall to a point when the projector can be seen. Varies with the time the sun has set. 3. Type of projector you suggest I hire. As bright as possible. After that it doesn't sound like your after any other crazy specifications. 4. Any extras I can do to make the picture viewable as early as possible Thanks in advance Hire in an LED Screen? Seriously, for the period from doors to the sunset, that will be the best option. Unless the God(s*) smile on you an give you a very dull overcast day, in which case it might just about be seen with a bright 10K on a small screen. The screen posted above is the venerable Barco B10 trailer. Available for a couple of Grand a day. PM me if you'd like a proper quote.
Dmills
Hi,1. Thoughts on using projection outside in daylightPointless. Not really, it can be done.70mm film with about 5KW of Xenon arc behind it will give a reasonable image size in anything but direct sunlight. Some of the Cinemeccanica rigs have an option of a 70mm gate and sprocket set which would allow operation in this mode, but finding one set up for transportable use, with the 70mm kit and then getting everything aligned will be a pain. There were some outdoor film screenings in Cambridge a few years back that did this (Front projection, but I don't see why rear would not work), maybe have a chat to the guys at the arts centre cinema there and see if they know of any suitable kit. This sort of thing is getting mighty specialist, and your choice of films will be fairly small. Regards, Dan.
djw1981
Do we know that the OP wants to show films though? I read it as being an IMAG / computer generated presentation type projection rather than a film based one.
jason5d
at 6pm in june even a 25K projector would be useless at about 9 you will start to see an image and at 10 you'll get a bright imageon just a 3K projector on a 25 ft image watch out for other light sources like street lights use an LED screen outside in the daytime
Pete McCrea
I should have put a caveat that in 90% of the cases this is so. However get enough firepower in and it is possible as Dmills says. However from the OP's tone I took it to mean that he was looking at the 'smaller end' of the spectrum, i.e. upto 10-12k.
Ian H
Last Summer I toured with a large US act doing projection and cameras..only problem somebody had forgoten to mention to production (and the crew) that we were doing outdoor shows -- we did 7 shows in Sweden, Norway and Denmark and when the act came of stage at 10pm it was still daylight .... 15k projector on 20ft screen --- pointless Ian H :D
