jamed2017
Hello folks, Noticed one of the speakers in my old old old pa system (70's) has given up. There pretty good speakers looking at them even by todays standards. Ive done a continuinty test and can get a flow to where the wire joins the diaphram and same on the other one. Theres a couple of bolts on that I cant seem to get off. Any advice on if this can be fixed and if not could someone please suggest me a replacement speaker for it. preferebly cheap. AshleyUK
Maybe some more infromation with the current speaker's Model e.t.c and what you use these speaker's for, this may help people tp point you toward's some new speaker's which will be fit for your need's and purpose. Is there any reason you can't get these bolt's off, rusted or they a different size/shape?
jamed2017
I use the speakers for DJing, but the cabs its out off dont have a tweeter so I use them for a my mid and my other pa for the top. They are Fane POP55/2 speakers. And the reason I cant get the bolts off, they just wont turn. they look fine. maybe im just weak.
Rob_Beech
Some of these old boxes do have a good sound to them. However, what you probably need to do is look at the cost of repair against the cost of replacing the drivers. If you replace one with another driver, then you'll have to do the other too or they'll sound different. If you're spending alot on money on doing this you have to weigh up the cost of a pair of new boxes. Borrow or hire a pair of budget speakers off a local hire company and compare the sound and output (with reference to power input) and see where you need to go from there. The magnet still wont come off. A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on. eee joy theres 4 drivers in total. =/ should just be a matter of fixing the brake on the electro magnet but getting to it is a nightmare. A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on. Well after lots of googling I think that its most likely the voice coil has burnt out. Soo if anyone can advice any 12" speakers. Cheep preferebly,I only use these everynow and then but have them as a sound system at home. Im thinking of getting two new 12" speakers and keeping 2 of the older ones. Mainly because I dont think I can afford to replace them all. (Its 2x 12" per cab.)Good idea? Cheers Jimmy
mostlyharmless
As you seem to have guessed - there is no Electromagnet in a loudspeaker. You might be able to take the magnet off the basket, however I expect there are screws under the cone as well. The way to the voicecoil on that speaker is to take a knife round the suspension (round the top edge of the front of the speaker), then round the spider (the lower suspension under the cone flush with the magnet). Then just pull the hole cone/suspension assy. out the basket! You will then see what you've burn't. Only any good doing this (unless just for interest) if you have a recone kit (new cone/suspension assy.) to glue back in the place of the one you just cut up!
