JMeG Posted May 9, 2004 Posted May 9, 2004 Hi Just wondering what people's opinions are on perfectionism, especially in a technical theatre environment. I'm a bit of a perfectionist myself, but I often wonder if it's a blessing or a curse... What do you think? Jamie
gareth Posted May 9, 2004 Posted May 9, 2004 It's a good thing to strive for, but it's rarely achieved.
Ike Posted May 9, 2004 Posted May 9, 2004 When I'm working on a theatrical production (all to rare at the moment  ) I tend to be quite picky but when I'm rigging 320 par64s for a rock concert as long as they are vaguely pointing in the right direction I'm not too fussed. From a theatre point of view I want it to be perfect and will try to make it that way however I like to think I know when to give up, even if thats after the 5 mins call!
vinny baby Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 its not a case of yourself wanting to be perfect. its your employer that wants you to be perfect vince
olistockman Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Perfectionism is something that any LD will try and strive for...unfortunately, everyone arounds you begins to hate you for it after a few hours...just move it 1.5mm's to the left, no it's too far, down a little bit, no no no it's gone out of focus....you get the picture!
JMeG Posted May 10, 2004 Author Posted May 10, 2004 Well, I think it's a state of mind that you either have or don't. I do and I must say it's very annoying! It's almost obsessive-compulsive, like your mind'll explode if you don't just nudge that batten up so it's exactly level with the other one, or if you don't make your rig perfectly symmetrical on both sides, regardless of the same effect on stage. *cue tumbleweed* Oh.. maybe it's just me, then. Maybe I'm ill... :** laughs out loud **:
the kid Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 I find that what I'm given to work with in school forces me to no be a perfectionist. But I would like to be, as I discovered when I did am-dram panto I didnt give up for ages and I know that it's going to haunt me. Hmmm That dosen't sound right.
smeggie Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 I am cursed with it in 'rock' environs where time is not so much of the essence as of everything. but when time is on my side [too rare] I always strive for the best and usually attain it. when it is something critical, I make time for 'faffing' with bits to indulge perfection. :** laughs out loud **:
gil-galad Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 There is nothing wrong with striving for perfection in rock gigs. It just gets very frustrating when you spend three hours banging cues into a console so you have a back to back show stack and the artists decide to come on from every point other than where they are supposed to!!!
Knut Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Hi, it´s a question of time you can sustain on on a genielift, :( - and how long the band / PM etc. etc. sustaining the genielift on stage :P
benweblight Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 I suffer from it alot, depends on the show, I always try and get perfctly symetrical rigs, so when I had half my rig unusablei got quite upset, but the organizer didnt notice so it wasjsut me really
