hat_boi
hey I'm currently studying at poole college doing technical theatre and am now on my final major project and doing the stage managers job for a show of the crucible I have been turning up to all of the rehearsals for the show and taking the blocking down in notes but this is all I am doing apart from seeking out props and checking the progress of my set and lighting and sound team. I was just wondering if there was anything else that I should be doing during rehearsals that I'm not currently doing? because otherwise I am seeing this as an easy job to do, being a stage manager? please can I have some suggestions of what else I could be doing or that I am meant to be doing from phil
robloxley
please can I have some suggestions of what else I could be doing Not your fault and I don't know what your syllabus is, but I'd have hoped that by the end of a technical theatre course you could have answered your question. John
Get a copy of Gail Pallins book on Stage Management. Its cheap and cheerful and you can order it through Amazon.co.uk. I teach Stage Management and it takes the best part of a year to get the basics across. Good Luck
lucy_ironside
or go to www.stagemanagementassociation.co.uk. They have cheap publications concerning this as well.
Chris M
Stage Management and all forms of theatre management and even technical staff really are in the job catorgory where if everythings going well, everyyones doing thier job and its a simple production, you can relax and have fun and things seem easy. However its when the pressure of production week is looming is when it shows you what type of production team you have. During a tech is where I think a great SM will shine. nataliebc1
Another good book is: Soozie Copley and Philippa Killner, Stage Management: a Practical Guide. This is written by two ex tutors at Guildhall. It is very clear, and good to read.... As for stage management being easy. You are either really good at it, or you have an amazing company around you... stage management is by no means an easy job. It is in fact one of the hardest allocations in my degree course... (my opinion of course, but shared by many people on my course!) I'm glad you seem to be enjoying it, give the book a read, its a real eye opener to the 'real' world.... Natalie

If I were you I would use the time to plan like crazy for the production week- You should also being sorting out schedules, cast registers, Production Meetings etc. etc. Sam
