olistockman Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 It's been a while since I've had a battery suffer from memory effect, and in the same week both my laptop and mobile are now suffering. There is an age-old trick of wrapping it tightly in food bag or other hermetically sealed container, to keep moisture out, and then placing it in the fridge or freezer overnight. I know this works, as I've done it before, but can't remember whether you put it in the fridge, or the freezer, and I'm lax to do it again until I know which appliance to put it in! Can anyone shed some light>?
gareth Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Never heard this in relation to curing memory effect in batteries before! (Bypassing car radio security codes, yes, but not this ...) The best method I know of for Li-Ion batteries is to run them through several deep charge-discharge cycles - worked a treat for my laptop battery a while ago.
olistockman Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 Yes, the deep charge and discharge works very well on Lithium batteries, NiMh respond well to the cooling, deep cycling a mobile never seems to do the job! 1 down...one to go....cheers Gareth
gareth Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 NiMh respond well to the cooling Hmmm, didn't know this. I've got a handful of NiMh AA-size rechargeables that aren't behaving as well as they should - I think perhaps a spell in the freezer is in order! How long should they go in for - couple of hours? Overnight? Couple of days?
olistockman Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 As I can't remember whether it is fridge or freezer, try the fridge first! run them completely flat, chill them overnight, and then give them a deep charge during the next day...if that is unsuccessful, run them flat and try the freezer overnight..same procedure!
olistockman Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 Forgot to mention....make sure they are in a sealed container of some kind, tupperware, food bag etc...as frozen moisture can do all sorts of damage...and to be on the safe side, just do one or two to start with....(worrying about 'safe temperatures' quoted on batteries!)
wilf Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I think the freezer trick only works on smart batteries.(the ones with a charge monitor ic in the package)I do know you can clear the memory of the ic ,by splittingthe battery and disconnecting the leads to the ic but I am not sure about the freezer trick
