I went to see Wildhearts at Wulfrun Hall Wolverhampton last night and saw the new ChamSys MagicQ desk in use.

The LD, Richard, is touring the board to road test it, looks like a lot of desk for the same price as a Pearl.

I had ago on that desk at the wulfrun last night, it is mainly gonna be PC based with lots of playback boards connected via USB or ethernet. Last night he was doing half the show on the new board and the other half on a Pearl ( no insult to the new desk just that have the show was already programmed).

He was doing the research and development on the board making notes on everything that was good and bad. he has had it for a while and they have made changes with his suggestions. He says it is easy to use and he has almost mastered it after only a few days.

If you see him ask him about it and he is happy to talk about it.

Remembered the name of the company doing the Wildhearts- Prism Lighting - you can google their url, seems like they do a lot of large shows.

The understanding I have of the Chamsys MagicQ system from having run the PC version and speaking to Richard at the gig is the console is based on Linux and runs a version of the program, the same program but different version runs on any PC with the screen changed to show the hardware switches, encoders and faders etc. The desk does not seem to have a PC motherboard in it as all the connectors on the back are in different places as well as extra stuff like leds to show the status of the internal UPS battery, some things like the USB connector are single and all motherboards have doubles. The best demo is when he unplugs the desk and it just keeps on working!!

The Desk outputs over ethernet using Artnet protocol as well as stuff like captures CPT protocol. Not having DMX out from the console allows it to have multiple consoles control a rig, have back system on line, read DMX data in merge the desk to it and send out again on the same network cable, etc The DMX comes from as many boxes as you want spread over the place connected to the network but only 6 universes.

The wing on the desk has 24 masters each with a LCD to legend it. This can be built into the same case as the desk, the one at the Wildhearts gig, or plug into the USB socket like a Hog2 wing. The wing can also plug into a PC to make the PC version easier to use.

Finally the most interesting thing Richard said was there is a USB playback / program wing with 2 DMX universes output that plugs into the PC as a PC Wing. He was expecting to have one in about 3 weeks to play with. That will make the MaqicQ a very useful product.

Ye the MagicQ came into the warehouse at Prism the other day, I had a bit of a ganders. It looks quite a nice desk, said to be cross between a hog II and pearl. Was Wildhearts good then?? Bristol was meant to be a good one

Just to let you all know that we (ChamSys) now have an official download page on our website (www.chamsys.co.uk) where you can download the latest version of our MagicQ console.

The latest version has a new Palette view window, master/slave console support, and transfer of patch information to Capture visualiser (www.capturesweden.com).

MagicQ PC is a six universe, fully functional lighting desk which you can download and use to control lights, free of charge.

As a quick update......

Ken has been a real star, I've been doing some testing with the desk and have just completed a succesfull week with it at Glastonbury for Fineline, toured one with Less than Jake for GLS as a babysitter and worked another for an allnight rave scenario also for Fineline recently.

Chris' (ken) support is always superb despite me being an idiot / blind a couple of times!!

The desk itself is going to make a big difference to the console market I feel, its so easy yet so powerfull, the touch screen makes life double quick and the thought that has gone into it really has some logic... And best of all in its small format its a 1 man lift in its case!!

Check out the website and start saving your money....

Works fine for me, on XP Pro. Sounds like you might have a corrupt download - try downloading it again, and see if it helps.

am re-downloading it now - will see what happens

cheers

[EDIT} have re-downloaded it, it still has the same problem with it.

the xp is home edition - could have something to do with it. service pack 1.

There is no difference between XP Home and Pro in terms of it's codebase - only the functionality which is built in. If it works in Pro, it will work in Home :S

Sounds to me like either:

- You are downloading with FTP using he wrong mode.

- The webserver is serving you up a corrupted version of the download (perhaps corrupted on the server's filesystem?)

- You have an ancient version of Windows Installer kicking around.

- Something else. :** laughs out loud **:

I have no problems getting it installed - it's just very daunting for a beginner once it's running!
