Ideal present for a techie?

Hi,

I need to buy a leaving present for a theatre technician but we haven't had much luck finding things so we're out of ideas.

Any advice for presents? He already has a mini maglite and a leatherman.

Many thanks,

Paul

Was about to say WAVICLE until I saw where your post pointed. Other than that can I suggest a childs toy magic wand preferably musical that he / she can keep in the tool box for use when all other tools (& hope) fails.

Nice of you to mention it :) Thanks

I was going to say a Leatherman Wave, probably one of the top five Most Useful Things I Have Ever Owned (and please let's not allow this thread to degenerate into yet another Leatherman v Gerber v Victorinox discussion, OK chaps ? )

EDIT:Oh, alright then, seeing as I've been handed the opportunity and because it's my birthday today ;) :** laughs out loud **: ...

For "backstage types" I recommend...

1. The Opalec NewBeamâ„¢ (in the LED adaptors section), which turns your Mini Maglite into a three LED torch

or....

2. The CMG Infinity Task Light or CMG Infinity Ultra (in the Pocket Torches section).

In return for this shameless and blatant plug, I will hold the Special Introductory Price on the Infinity Ultra at just £15.95 for another month, until 1st June 2004 (SRP: £19.95, Our Normal Price: £17.95).

Hurry, hurry; tell your mates; thank you, thank you; love you, love you; etc., etc.

As the owner of a large collection of LED torches...

The CMG Infinity Task Light is neat. It hangs nicely around your neck on a lanyard, doesn't weigh too much and puts out enough light for 'tweaking' things. I've found that if you turn it on and leave it hanging around your neck it's pretty useful to see to do things on the ground in front of you, eg reloading pyros, plugging up stage boxes.

As a retro-fit for a mini maglite you might want to look at the Out-Tec led flashlight tuner. It fits onto the base of you maglit and has white and red leds which you can use alongside the origianl filament lamp.

Another suggestion on the LED front would be a LED headlamp. I've had a normal filament lamp one for years but it takes 4 AA cells and is pretty heavy which makes it uncomfortable after 10 minutes wearing it. On lightnix's advice I bought a Princeton Tec Aurora from him and it's great. The old one weighs 200g, the Aurora just 80g, I hardly notice I'm wearing it. It's got 3 power levels plus flash modes., power is 3 AAA cells.

My final suggestion would be a 1/4 inch hex drive multi-screwdriver set. I have one made by CK, bought from RS for about £20. It's got a magnetic handle and hex bits which fit in the end. Bits included are Posi, Philips, slotted, hex, torx (security style) and small sockets up to 13mmm.

Oh, and "Happy Birthday" lightnix.

How about This...

As it says on the website...

"A tape measure is simply not up to scratch unless it has a voice recording function and built-in light..."

Oddly enough I've never thought of it that way until now :D

Never mind, James the Doorman looks like he might be a good man in a tight corner...

"James will gladly wedge his toe under the heaviest door all night long without complaint..."

How can you fail to be impressed by that :** laughs out loud **:

I'm not sure where they bought it but a fellow technician I know got given this torch called the "flic lite" or somthing - it's got to be the coolest torch I have ever seen - to turn it on you hold the base and flick your wrist and to turn it off you tap the base - WOW!!! How many times have you been caught in the smallest space and then have to fiddle with turning the head of a mini maglite... well no more! I'll find out where it was bought and let y'all know.

Perhaps you are looking for this here. Looks good except a little expensive!

Is he a general all rounder type of technician ?? In which case has he got a quad spanner or a podger - if he does stage as well as LX/SND. Or are you looking for more of a gadget to give him?

If you want gadgets try this website
