JDP
Unless I am mistaken, Sons (as they are commonly known to me) are flood like units with ballasts in the bottom. These have bulbs with a gas inside them, and you can get them in colours such as blue, green, white etc. A lot of people use them for outdoor lighting of buildings and sports hall lighting etc. From memory, they have a good IP ratings too. Or am I thinking of the wrong thing?

Jerome
Although I dont feel you've searched very hard- 'Son et lumiere' directly translates to English from French as 'Sound and Light'. I happen to be working on one at the moment. Son et lumiere's usaully or traditionally tell a story through sound and light and are usually performed in rememberance for some service. There are a few castles in Brittain that hold them annualy and I know the Royal British legion are a fan of them to tell stories of soldiers. Also, with video becoming more and more integrated into productions nowadays you may find this also included, as the excuse is that a projector is a light etc. Son et lumiere's shouldn't include any live performers of any sort (performers can be used in the video however) the shows purely take pride in the works of our great technology that we as technicians have hours of fun playing with. Hope this helps Jerome This may also help you. Only took me two seconds to find
lampieman
thanks for your help, so going from what you have said what I thought is right but also they are more traditionally for outdoor events? so say someone asked you to do one inside that wouldnt be classed as a son et lumiere? paulears
Inside is fine - I did one in a huge church with interesting history. As we said - it's just telling a story with sound and light and can be very powerful. It's probably the only real time where the technology is the thing people are watching and listening to without being distracted by actors! Very challenging. Do you watch James Bond films - there was a Roger Moore one where one scene was a Son et Lumiere at the Great Pyramid in Giza.

bob_lamb
Hi I know your post is old but I have seen the Son et Luminare in Chartes in France. I was at the Moto GP at LeMans and bumped into the tech manager who saw me drooling over his show and gave me a grand tour, true testament to the geeks in the industry have respect and love showing off their shiney toys. It is a serious high end project with names such as Christie, Highend, ETC. The equipment cost was €2,000,000 and has a different theme each year. I have some pics and a short video if you want a copy Hi all, been a long time... well I have done a search on google and here but havent really found much help... please can someone explain so I know I am thinking the right thing here... what exactly is a son et luminaire?
