which screen is 'tougher' - LCD or Plasma

Hi All,

Am busy building a mobile media unit, basically an old VW which is going to be fitted out with 42inch screens. Is there any inherit properties which would make one type of screen tougher than the other? Any recommendations for screens which are better for dealing with vibration etc?

Probably going to make up some perspex protection screens made up to protect them from kids chucking stuff!

Cheers

LCD By a long shot, plasma has lots of trouble with pixels being "crushed" or damaged when the pannels are dropped. Go with LCD, also I am interested in what this project is for and what it will turn out like. (into the VW's :))

Surely you have this back to front.. plasma's have glass fronts so are much harder to damage in this way than an LCD.

I think you would need to look at some form of shock absorbing mounts and the like... having driven in lots of old VW's, they're not the smoothest of rides... A while back LG (I think) brought out a Wii-proof LCD, basically a standard LCD but with a reinforced front panel.

You have a valid point. Mostly here in the US we all hear terrible stories about Plasma screens being dropped or even jarred a certain way and pixels will actually get crushed causing dead spots in screens. I would say LCD all the way as thats what they use in all automotive tv displays as far as portable DVD players and expensive stereo's. Stick with whats proven, you dont have much to gain by going with plasma! :D

cool, thanks guys, will look into the Wii proof ones!

Am getting flight cases for them, and the vast majority of journeys they'll be in them, just for some 'round the block' type of travelling they'll be in situ. probs going to use overlockers to mount them....http://www.doughty-engineering.co.uk/shop/7/63/index.htm

its a slightly newer VW that they're going in, the 80's boxy thing, will post some pictures up when its done. suspension is much better on these ones!

Cheers!
