mcauley
I have two pairs of Proac Studio 1 speakers. I believe that the tweeters are not working. How do I test to find out whether the problem lies with the tweeters or the crossover unit. Can anybody help. If the tweeters need replacing has anybody done this? I believe that the square tweeters (originally from Germany) are no longer available. I have spoken to Proac, they proved to be very unhelpful over this matter. I would be grateful for any leads. Simon Lewis
You may well get better information about replacement units if you ask on the specialist loudspeaker forums. With regards to testing crossovers and HF units, an oscilloscope, millivoltmeter or audio meter that's good for 1kHz and above should tell you if there is an audio signal coming out of the crossover. You would probably need to lift one of the leads to the HF unit whilst trying this. Also, whilst you have one lead off, measure the voice coil resistance. A very low or zero reading would indicate a short circuit in the coil. Around 6 Ohms would be right for a healthy 8 Ohm unit, and a very high reading would mean the voice coil has burnt out and is open circuit. regards. carey
Mcauley, you need to call your local Proac dealer, or find a Proac dealer who can help. Proac is a business-to-business company and probably don't have the resources to help you properly like a retailer can.
mcauley
Thanks for last comments on my last post. Great help. Looks like I need new tweeters for my Proac Studio1 speakers. Has anybody out there replaced the tweeters in these speakers. What product did you use? The original square shaped ones (Made in Germany) now seem to be obsolete. Can anybody point me in the right direction to find them, or a suitable replacement that will work with the crossover unit to achieve the original sound. Many thanks McAuleyModeration: Threads merged. Let's keep all the related material in one place - it makes things easier if you're searching for info... Audiotechneut
I realize this topic is quite old. If the problem still exists than I can help out. The tweeters are manufactured for ProAc by MB Quart Germany. They can repair the originals if you sent then to them. At about €40,- each they will be as new. In most cases the coil is burned. The crossover of your loudspeakers is most probably OK.Should you want to know more details, let me know.Regards from The Netherlands P.s. They are really worth reparing. ProAc Studio 1 is a famous monitor with a great sound!
