Linking Desks

Hi All.

Does anyone know if it's possible to link another desk to a Strand 300 Series so as to give access to more faders/subs, but still record the cue as a single item so as to work off the go button?

I know that it can be done with other makes of desks but is it manufacturer specific (I.e, the desks are designed & built to be linked).

The scenario is that a local venue has a 125 Channel 300 Series with 4 fader panels. These are set to be channels 1-96, but ideally, the client want's to run another desk in tandem (Using DMX in/through/out) so as to give easy access to channels 97 upwards for plotting.

To be honest, the idea of having some extra subs to hand also appeals.

The 300 Series in question doesn't have a DMX "in" point, so any other desk would have to be second in the line and I'm thinking any channels plotted on it wouldn't then register on the 300.

Or am I completely on the wrong track?

Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

You are correct in assuming that the 300 series desk won't register the output of the downstream desk (RDM? and similar add-on tech apart, basically DMX is similar to a one way street) the 2nd desk should (depending on the mode selected to process the DMX input) be able to record the 300 series desk's output.

I am assuming the second desk with the DMX input actually decodes the DMX packets (some just pass through the packets on a range of channels). out of interest what is the second desk you are trying to link?

This may be too simplistic, but there are 4 pages available for each sub panel, so theoretically you could programme page 2 as channels 97-192, for example...

That is using faders patched as channels...

Thanks Ynot.

I did think of that, but unfortunately, a lot of the coming show will have to be programmed on the fly, so ready access to a few more subs was what I was hoping for.

I think that there was a software option to unlock the other panels so as to be subs and it appears that this particular desk doesn't have that option otherwise I'd set the whole desk up as submasters.

Maybe that was only available on sother versions of the 300 - don't know.

Cheers anyway.

As it happens I researched that very thing some weeks ago, having bought a couple of extra sub panels. Turns out that to get the software upgrade from Strand (yes, they will still supply new upgrade codes) would cost rather a lot...
