Slightly unusual props

Hi everyone

 

I'm propping a production of the Blue Room and haven't ASM'd for a while so a couple of the props are proving a tad tricky to find and I thought this would be the best place to ask around!! I'm based in London and would really appreciate some pointers on tracking down: an approx 8in high statue of the Madonna, a pair of heavy horn rim mens specs and (I know the next one should be easy but I can't think of a cheap place to go to!) 2 wedding rings (1 mens, 1 ladies). We don't have a huge budget (and would be unlikely to be able to hire) so any help would be hugely appreciated!

For the Madonna (Assuming we are not talking pop star), try a religious bits shop of the Catholic variety. They tend to have these (some showing remarkably little taste!).

Possibly a shop attached to the local Catholic cathedral might be a good contender.

 

Failing that it is readily (if a little expensively) available online.

wedding rings - definitely from the costumestore.co.uk. They have "one size fits all" wedding rings for theatre.

 

Madonna - bit more tricky but the shop attached to Westminster Cathedral (which is not the same as Westminster Abbey!) is the primary Catholic cathedral in England. The staff in the shop are usually pretty helpful, or try Googling for various prop hire companies... sounds like the sort of thing A&M Hire might have!!

There is a shop 100yards South (walking) from Plaistow station (district line and others) that sells religious statues of several faiths.

You could buy cheap rings in Argos.

 

Glasses - try a local opticians. Some collect old glasses tosend to less privalaged countries, they may lend you a pair that you could remove the lenses from. I have previously bought some from a charity shop.

 

Madonna - try Trading Post. They are based west London, near Heathrow. 0208 574 7017/8 If they don't have one the staff are very helpful and will probably know someone who does.
