DMX Cable Drum

Sorry if this is the wrong forum section for this question, but I wasn't sure where to post.

If I bought a cable drum e.g. http://www.ukgigstore.co.uk/70220-small-cable-drum-86-p.asp for DMX cables could I use the DMX cable with some of it still rolled up? I know you can't with power cables but is DMX a low enough voltage?

Thanks, Jon

If you want to run long cables, which I assume its for, ie 100M lengths of DMX, why not figure of 8 it into a small flightcase. It may be a tad more expensive, but it will stop it getting mangled.

Yes you are probably right. I am using 20m lengths and just thought it might be easier to just roll the cables up after using them, but it is probably better to keep them tidy and untangled than quicker to tidy up.

A 20m cable isn't particularly long - I have quite a lot of 25m DMX leads in my stock which are simply coiled up in the normal way (under-over). They live in a large flightcase along with other cables. Never had any particular issue with them tangling.

I suspect most people wouldn't start considering a drum until you get to, say 30m at least. A few companies I've worked for have had 50m DMX leads coiled normally. The last 10m or so starts getting a bit painful to coil, but just workable.

Ben.
