if I were to do a gig in barcelona (so preferably in/near barcelona), where would be a good, english speaking rental house (just need pars, profiles, control gear etc.)?

Earpro S.A. in Barcelona are a very good company, more info at http://www.earpro.es - not sure if they do rental, but I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.

I'd always be wary of hiring any kit in Spain, it's a beautiful country with lovely people, but they just don't look after their kit the way others do and the overall standard of English in Spain isn't brilliant. They also have Siesta every day, which means that any crew you get with the kit may wander off for a snooze after lunch.

 

I'd get the kit from Germany and truck it from there. Showtec in Cologne or Berlin (who also own Vari-lite Deutschland) would be my first choice (English website here). Excellent kit, great crews who speak English well, are friendly and work damn hard. You'd probably get a better price from Procon, but their kit isn't so hot in my experience.
