Pete McCrea
I spoke to three different companies at Plasa, and we've decided to stick with Easyjob. We are paying for the support and ongoing work that they put into the system through the purchase price. If you want to see what a hire company needs then I seriously suggest you download a trial of one of the bits of software available. I think you need to consider where you target your work. It's unlikely that a hire company will go for a free product. There's too much risk. So it might be worth your time deciding to omit some features such as freelance management, that one man bands who do it all themselves don't need. Maybe you do decide to actually charge for the product. I was being quoted between £1700 and £6000 for a three user licence, so there is some mileage in developing a good product and charging for it. Nick LX
Ok, I will have a discussion. I am writing with someone else, who specialises in the security of online applications. I downloaded easyJob, but the trial doesn't seem to work so well, something wrong with the MySQL.
djw1981
You also need to consider data security - if online hosted on the user's system, then they will need to be assured that the data on it is safe - contact details of clients etc, since few of your customers will be in a position to check that themselves. If you offer a hosted system, then the same applies, but you will also have a role. AIUI some software companies even have insurance against their software causing a data security breach for a customer. This means that the compensation and rectification costs are met by insurance, not the software development company
Nick LX
I need some help now though. For things such as PAT testing. What database fields would I need? At the moment I have:Item Identification NumberPass or FailDate last testedNext test date As for security, I think I would have an online database, with just the person's name and customer id, and then when I customer registers, for a file to be sent to the admin, adding that persons' details to the offline database. Ben Langfeld
I'd think that next PAT date would be automatically calculated, based on what the item is and a test schedule that had been entered at the setup stage. Some items need testing at different intervals to others, and there's no point the user having to work that out.
Lincon
Customers are the most valuable asset of any business and access to them is vital. ASP Hire allows new customers to be entered quickly and efficiently onto the system, together with the facility to amend existing customer details easily. Or send me a link? Thanks

Pete McCrea
It would also be worth having the relevant test values so that history can be looked back at to see if there is a pattern to the result i.e. increase in resistance etc. As others have said, the frequency should be user adjustable, and the there should be the capability to define several periods, i.e. Annual, 6th Monthly, 3 monthly etc.
