Hi Phil

I'm at RWCMD and having a great time. I came here straight after my A-levels, and I'd say around half of us (first years) did the same. The other half took a year out and either worked in local theatres or for companies related to the industry. There are also a few who did totally unrelated things, and the great thing about the course is that the first two terms are spent getting you all up to the same 'basic' level. The degree is split virtually 50/50 practical to theory - 6 weeks working on a production, then 6 weeks theory on all areas. I don't know much about the Bretton Hall course, but my overall opinion would be go and spend some time looking around both of the places (I assume you had a tour when you came to RWCMD) - look at what we're doing, look at what Bretton Hall are doing, and see which one you prefer.

As for whether or not to take a year out, it depends on your personal circumstances. It could be a chance to get a lot of knowledge under your belt and to build up a reserve of money to use when that oh so small student loan runs out, then again it could be a total waste of time, bumming around the house and eating pizza (mmm pizza!).

As with everything in this industry, you get out of it what you put in. If you're not 100% about starting a course, try and find reasons to become 100%. The most successful students here are the ones who have positive attitudes and take up opportunities.

I hope some of the above is of use to you. If you want any more information, PM me or feel free to ask questions on the board.

I am currently at GSMD, london, in my second year, and I wish that I had taken a gap year, taken some time out and worked in theatre, and gone travelling. I think if you are about to start a course to go into a very hard industry, time to grow up can be an amazing bonus, it can help you decide whether you really want to go into theatre, get some experience in the real world, and become (it sounds sad) a more rounded person. THis is what I have taken in from my own experience, and talking to many of my year who did take a gap year - and have said it was the best decision they could have made.
