Hey Guys,

I'm off to tenerife this week to work as a patch/stage monkey at a classical/ochestral event. I know little spanish and was wondering whether any of you multi-talented multi-lingual persons on here could give some helpful phrases or a bit of heads up some issues you guys have come across when working there?!

I've worked out microphone, is microfono! Any more help appreiciated!!

Thanks

Matt

Please excuse the spling. My Spanish is received, I work in a languages department as a technician. Punctuation like ! and ? also appear at the beginning of the statement or question upside down, but I can't find them at the moment.

Hola! Que tal? - Hi, how are you?

Hablo Inglesi? - Do you speak English?

Une cerveza por favour. - A beer please.

What more do you need to know?

Do you want to come back to my place, bouncy-bouncy?

My hovercraft is full of eels.

Oh, wait, those might be Hungarian...

If you google 'translate' there are a couple of free web engines (like babelfish I think it's called) that will translate what you want to say into a pidgin version of it, which is marginally better than merely raising your voice and speaking slower.

These are some words I learnt abroad, and will not always be spelt correctly as I learnt some of them by pointing and memorising the reply phonetically!

Me no habla Espanol - I don't speak Spanish

Por favor - please

Gracias - thank you

De nada - it's nothing

mas - more

menos - less

baho (spelt bajo I think) below or down - think sound checks!

alto - higher

volumen - volume

Altobothes - speakers (spelt altovoces)

Luthes - lights (spelt luces) also Focos and Luz is light

Ensenario - stage

La Carpa - tent/entertainment venue

Escallera - ladders, but add metalico to get metal ones...as someone else here told me when I went out to work where he did!

Enchuffay - socket

bentillardo - fan (spelt ventilado)

Above all, be polite, and try to speak a few words of Spanish, and they will help you. I managed to get the manager of a hotel to buy a new portable minidisc player, when others failed to get so much as a smile from him. At the end of my second year there, I returned it as new, despite it being used every day by the poolside. I also had time to mend his old one. He offered me a job there the following year, but I had already got work for that year.

Thanks Guys, so helpful.

Thanks Light Console for those useful words, I'm all up for attempting to speak a little spanish, I can just see it being a nightmare if I don't know anything!! I'll brush up on my 1-48 channels! :) I need to learn some instruments as well! Violin, Cello maybe some timpani! :) I'll head over to babel fish! Good suggestion.

Do you want to come back to my place, bouncy-bouncy?

My hovercraft is full of eels.

** laughs out loud ** I'll let you know if I get to use these!!

Bring on bouncy bouncy and caverzas!

Light Console's list is pretty good for a start off. I have thought of some useful words when trying to make yourself understood. Millsy might know these but for anyone reading this thread.

Este, Esta = this, that, (you can also use these for plurals and you will still be understood)

Aqui = Ackee = Here, useful when lot's of arm waving ensues.

So ," Esta y esta aqui, por favor".

Alli = Ayee = There. Same applies.

Con = with (surprisingly useful.)

Bueno = Good. It's used a lot and is nice and friendly.

Muy bien = Moy Bee Enn = kinda like OK, very well, let's do that then etc.

Venga = come on, come with me, let's go.

Mira = Look at this.

Arriba = Up. Good for truss trimming or volume.

Grande = Big

Camion = Truck

Peligroso = Dangerous.

Number and colours are also useful but you can look them up. When you are over there, a lot of words make sense anyway.

Nope not had the planes out since december! Things keep getting in the way!

ooof! where do I start!?!

The most usefull things I can translate will be deleted by mods....

However,

gig/job - Bolo

"everyone to lunch" - "A comer!" (you'll hear that a lot!!)

"were going to have a <insert drink name>" - Vamos a tomar una ******

cerveza - beer (remeber that one!)

Este - this

essa - that

Donde? - where?

cual? - which?

quien - who?

Vale (said Bahleh) - OK

Me cago en su puta madre - general statement for when something goes wrong...

Ostia puta! - as above

coño - as above

joder - (getting the idea yet?)

So your going to be doing normal instruments etc..

Most musicians know that their instrument is called in english.. infact most have the same name just pronounced in spanish, so dont worry about it too much!

So, for talking to musicians:

Can you play a little? - puedes tocar un poco?

Anything else.. pm me but seems like lots of people have been giving all the usual suggestions!

So. Tips to get the best out of trip to spain...

Eat with the locals and eat what teh locals recomend! Trust me if you love your food as much as I do, you wont want to go home!

99 times out of a hundred if someone tells you something cant be done, it usually can but they dont want to.. be persistant and patient ...

You will more than definately find, that if you use a local crew, they will do things you are not used to .. but its harder to try and re-educate them to do things the "right way" than it is to fix the problems later...

otherwise.. good luck and enjoy! Bit colder than its been right now.. which is a shame!
