raj Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 Im looking to add a couple of fixtures to my show..I already run 4 mac250s and 4 918s, along with a few moon flowers and strobes etc. Do you think I should just slap in another pair of mac250s or try out the mx10s? Pretty much the same price so thats not too much of an issue. Ive heard that the mx10s have had teething problems with focusing and gobos...? (or should I just ignor the above and go for a pair of kryptons?! :P )
mac500 Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 I would go with a pair of MX-10's. Martins Tech support is excellent so if you do have any problems then they will provide you the service to get your fixtures working proberbly.
raj Posted April 20, 2004 Author Posted April 20, 2004 actually, I correct myself. The mx10s workout about £1000 more expensive when you include a custom case for the pair as martin dont seem to do one (great :P ). Taking that into consideration, still worth the purchase?
mac500 Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 As you already have MAC 250's I would still recomend the MX-10's or u could go for something like Wizards if you wanted something a bit different.
Stu Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 Raj, You don't say which version of the 250s you have but if they are the originals/+s, it should be noted that the MX10 Extreme has the same gobos, colours etc as the 250 Krypton (judging from the specs etc) - wether the electronics and optics are the same as the Kryptons I don't know, but it might be worth thinking wether you wanted your MX10s to complement your old 250s, or wether you want to add something new. One plus point is the MX10s will move alot faster :P Stu
mac500 Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 The gobo's are different in the MX-10's to the kryptons.
Stu Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 Whoops - well ok the MX10s have some of the same gobos! Stu
paulears Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 I bought a couple of the pearl river pilot 250's just after plasa. They match well with mac 250's. only meaningfull differences are that they are a bit noisier than the macs - maybe that doesn't matter in your application. they dont focus out so soft - the mac are really good for thatthe cases are a really slippy type of rubber - very odd. good bits are two gobo wheels, with a decent selection of gobos - mine even had a little box with some extras, and best of all - they are very cheap - £600 each inc vat, add a double case and you're away
Stu Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 You get what you pay for! I've got to stick up for the Pearl River fixtures here (and obviously agree with Paul)... I've used the 250s quite a few times now and they are far superior to the Mac 250s (the olduns of course. Not used the new Krypton or Entour, but I reckon they'd be just as good too) in just about everything. The gobos are nicer (plus two wheels :P one fixed, one rotater), they have a 3 part zoom, 15.5, 17 and 19.5º if I remember rightly. Shame it's not a motorised zoom tho), lovely optics, move quite quickly for a head (I had them banging about on a club rig from 0-255 on the Pan/Tilt and they were loving it). I've also experienced excellent service and support from both Pearl River and Miltec (one of the UK PR distributors). In the case of PR, I e-mailed their support line and got a reply in 12hrs from their Vice President, and in the case of Miltec, a hire company I occasionally work for had one go down while I was prepping it. One quick phone call to Miltec, they told us the problem, how to fix it and two minutes later it was addressed and prepped, and in the flightcase. My only bug bear is there is no Theatrical breakup as supplied (obviously a quick job to replace tho) and the handles are a bit funny (not really handles as such) which make them a little clumbersome to flip. Mind you they way so little that it didn't really matter. We used 6 of them on a gig (the one I was prepping this is) along side 4xMac 600s and 4xMac 500s and everyone was really impressed with them... Very bright Yup I have to admit I had my reservations about the Pilot 250s before I used them because they weren't a recognised brand or manufacturer, but I eat humble pie after I lit a show with them - wonderful fixtures and I'd certainly be using them again... Stu
