I'll be using a premium pro house rig at the end of the month (22nd-24th). thing is, I cant tell you much more than "its okay" because its on the end of a really duff signal chain, in a crap room, with college metal bands on the other end!

my shows are a bit more tame, so I'll let you know my experiences with it in due course.

Really nice, lovely bottom end, and the crossovers are great. use them alot. But without you saying what kind of music you are putting through them its hard to say the pros and cons, but as far as general subs go, they are nice.

King Tom IV. I believe we're looking at the 15+1 (or whatever the HF is) Full range / Mid Top box here, not the 115 subs.

I have a pair of the 115 subs, but I have 15XB's in mine due to me buying them unloaded for a few quid. They do a good job but I have no idea how they compare to the original drivers.

I also have a pair of the 12 inch tops and I think they're great. Can't comment on the 15's though. Sorry.

ahh, my mistake, the subs are 18" anyway. and yes it is 1" HF in the 15.

The mid/high, got the HK duo tilt, allows either 3 or 7 degree tilt. 128dB, at half space. built in limiter in the HF line, 53Hz to 19kHz.

Nice speakers, you looking at the passive stuff, or the new active stuff?

The CURRENT sub is an 18 yes. The earlier version did a 15. I'm not sure if they did a 15 and an 18 or just a 15, but I have a pair of the 15's so there certainly WAS a 15 inch version, you're quite right, they only do an 18 now in this range.

I realise you are quoting the figures so aren't at fault, but I've never understood the point of half space measurements for mid/top boxes to go on sticks..... hmmmm (tm : Ynot)

Finally, the duo tilt system whilst handy is not something I particularly like. You look at it and think "that's handy" and it is, (I initially thought exactly this) providing you want 3 or 7 degrees down. What if you want 5, or 10, or 12, or 8 degrees up for a balcony? I soon realised this flaw, I'd sooner it just have a standard pole mount and buy the adjustable angle K&M adaptors for about £12 each (that's how I do it for boxes I own that I don't have flying yokes etc for). YMMV

RMS rating is 400watts.. Typically we'd put an amp of between 1.5 times and 2 times this rating on it for headroom purposes. It seems HK have gone for a more modest 1.5times (keeping budget in mind).

128dB will be a theoretical maximum. this will be calculated from the sensitivity of the box at 1m and calculated using the power handling of the box. One thing that has always interested me with SPL figures with powered boxes is the amount of utter crap they spout. This is not true for all boxes of course.

If we take a box with a 100dB 1w/m sensitivity and ignore heat and compression. if we put 100watts into a box in theory we can expect 120dB. 400watts therefore would be 126dB. This would typically be a continuous rating. We generally give a peak rating of 4 times the rms level, we can expect another 6dB on top of this for that rating although this is generally calculated rather than measured. so a peak rating of 132dB for a particular box. However this would be with an amplifier input of 1600watts.

With a powered box, you are limited to the amplifier in the box. If the amp is only 1.5times rms, you will not have the same SPL level as you would if you used the unpowered version of a box and put a big big amp on it.

The figures often don't add up.

Edit: These boxes claim 104dB 1w/m. This sounds very ambitious to me for a simple reflex box. It's amazing how each of the boxes in the range have exactly the same sensitivity, be them subs, or various mid/top boxes

No I've never understood the half space stuff, seems bit pointless.

The sub you have, its not one of the old linear3's is it? light on the front, metal grill?

Interesting to note though, hk actually recommend an amp 4 times as powerful for there passive stuff.

And to agree with Rob, what the speaker says it is going to kick out, and what actually comes out are two different things, I have different tastes in speaker for different applications, depends what you want, where you want it, and who your playing it to.

I've put Res4 systems in to places, where the audience wouldn't of realised if id dropped mackie active stuff in. (dance/ dub step based music before anyone wonders)

And back to the OP, really you have to try these things out before you'll know, advice can be given in here, but do you know any hire companys that have stock, I can think of a couple that hold Hk, or even better a friend or a shop that will let you borrow a pair for a gig. try them out, see what you think.

and ( I realise how many times ive said and in this) what else are you looking at? or do you want advice on this as well.

The Hk speakers are lovely speakers, you wont be disappointed. but there might be something out there more suited to you, there might not.
