abbylouise_price
I am working for an exhibition company creating a Roman style tent. I want to have lots of bloody furs lying around the tent (for decoration not costume) but wondered how I would go about fireproofing them? Would the Rosco type products work? The fabrics shops I have been too didn't seem to know if they were already f/p? Many thanks for any help.
Propsgirl
Unless you are buying from a specialist theatrical shop, it is very unlikely that the fabrics will be fire retarded. If is is pre fire-retarded the shop would know about it - it adds rather a lot onto the price! You can fire retard fabric yourself. I don't know about where you are, but here you are supposed to have a "licence" to ba able to fire retard. i.e. you need to do a course so someone can show you how to spray a pre mixed solution with a plant sprayer onto some fabric. It's a bit of a joke really, but the resulting product is not certified unless person doing it is. Having said that, I do some fire retarding myself, and I always make sure I thoroughly soak the fabric. Fur will be a to do, I reckon. You need to find a suitable product first. A lot of products (especially ones that you mix yourself) will leave a crystal residue. This can sometimes be brushed off once it is dry. It pays to do patch tests I reckon. Rosco products are pretty good, and pretty expensive! The other thing is that these products do not make things totally fire-proof, just fire retarded. You'll find that your fur will probably end up in nasty melted plasticy lumps if a fire did meet with it. Good luck with it!! A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on. Another thought crossed my mind - wool is naturally flame retardant. I know sheepskins are not a "romanly decorative" as leopard or tiger, but could you cheat it and paint dye onto sheepskins? Depends how close the audience are, and how much realism you want of course.
propsman
quote "Modacrylic is the finest faux material available in the world, and is inherently fire retardant and actually self extinguishing." guess thats why they use it in furniture and kids clothes... any way.... faux fur that contains MODACRYLIC should therefore be ok to use in your exhibit. It also does not have to come from a specialist theatrical supplier and can be reasonably priced and hey even machine washable. some examples are on web site below. http://secure.marchioness.co.uk/Marchiones...c_Range_24.html Disclaimer... me and propsgirl are not connected in any way whatsoever and I thought of the name first ..hahhahahahahah
Propsgirl
Disclaimer... me and propsgirl are not connected in any way whatsoever and I thought of the name first ..hahhahahahahah Sorry - off topic but I couldn't resist...... Ha ha - apt disclaimer, Propsman. But I must admit, it was not even me that thought of the name - I've kind of been nicknamed after a character on a kids show here in NZ: Propsboy. We apparently have a whole family!! But apparently propsboy used to wear a wierd mask bag thing on his head. So depending on how long you have been "Props" you may be seriously misinformed. I have no idea when this tv show character first came into being.
