Rob Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 I want to be able to create Adobe PDF's from word files. I think I need to convert the original document to a PostScript file first, before putting it into distiller - So how do I convert to a PS file?
MikeR Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 You can create Pdfs from word (for example or any other app) without having to go via postscript (at least in the manual sense). Download and install pdfcreator from here To use it you print your doc using the pdfcreator printer driver rather than your usual "paper" printer.
peter Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 You may also find the Adobe online tool CreatePDF useful. Peter
Ellis Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 If you really want to create a postscript file, install a postscript printer driver, attach it to a port called File: and print ot that - you will get a dialog box asking for a filename to print to. HTH Ellis
andystone Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 You can also download this free PDF writer www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf
Neil Frazer Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 You should be able to print directly to acrobat distiller if you have the full version. It comes up in the printers window and then asks for a file name when you print to it.
Rob Posted April 9, 2004 Author Posted April 9, 2004 You should be able to print directly to acrobat distiller if you have the full version. It comes up in the printers window and then asks for a file name when you print to it. Yup, exactly what I'm doing now I've figured it out! I sent out a PDF quote for the first time and got a phone call back from the customer asking for it in word format so they didn't have to download acrobat. Can't win :-)

Stu Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 I was under the impression Sun has discontinued Star Office (freeware version at least) and replaced with Open Office. What the actual situation is I'm not sure... Stu
wodp Posted April 13, 2004 Posted April 13, 2004 If you use Mac OS X (10.3 is what I got with my iBook, dunno about previous versions) it actually has a Print to PDF button in the generic system print dialog. Dave
Guest lightnix Posted April 13, 2004 Posted April 13, 2004 I use Page Plus by Serif, a competitively priced and extremely capable piece of DTP software, which has the facility to save a document in PDF format.
iamchristuffin Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I'm dredging up a very old topic here, but I thought I'd let everyone know (who didn't already know ) that with MS Office 2007 you can download an add-on from the Microsoft website that allows you to save the document straight into a PDF, just by clicking save as, and then PDF!!

(Not freeware as erroneously stated above, its open source.)
