Maddison
Afternoon all, The next show that I am LDing (West Side Story), I intend to use three GCs; warm and cool colour corrections and a night-time wash. Just wondering whether anyone has any advice on this? My thoughts were to have a range of lavanders (L 170ish) and blues (L 366 + 183) in the FOH positions with top and side lighting in purple (L 048ish) and blue (L 181) Obviously there is an element of balancing, as well as trusting your gut/creative instincts in doign this, but I was hoping that there might be some Blue Roomers who have done similar before, and would be able to tell me what worked for them; my fear is that the whole thing ends up looking more like Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, than New York at night :S For information; the space is an Opera Stage, and there is no shortage on generic lanterns. Cheers.
Just Some Bloke
You need to decide what kind of mood you want to create then match the colour to the mood. Do you want it to be "creepy", "shadowy", "drab", "masculine", "musical theatre", or just "dark"? All of these would work with different LDs and different Directors. All would require a different colour. Last time I did WSS I seem to have used a mixture of 119 from behind and 079 from the sides, but that wouldn't necessarily be what I'd use if I did it again. With a different director it could be quite different. Chose your mood and get out the swatch!
cliveybaby
I also like using points of light instead of full coverage for nighttime scenes its nice as it creates shadows and gives depth (not too many though)dont be scared to have the odd dark patch as long as there is noaction their Maybe a a very light hint of gen wash with specifics dotted about gives an effect of lights from windows/street lights etcmaybe even a touch of haze im not a fan of too much blue hue in a open air night scenecrisp 1/4 CT is my bag but its all down to taste HTH's a bit Cliveybaby
LeeStoddart
Just dug out my last WSS design (from 2002!) and see that I had cover in 203. There was 071 (and 048 and 021) on booms and gobos in 201 and 136. there were also a couple of window gobos in 142 and I also had some backlight with scrollers. But as others have said - you can do night in many different ways and they can all work.
