Helen c
Hi I am going to uni this september to do technical theatre and have been trying to find some decent, hardwearing black trousers for a while. However, they either fit but are made out of naff fabric, fall apart really quickly and dont have enough pocket space or have everything I need but don't fit. I am admittedly a fairly slight, tall build. Most suitable work trousers I have tried on fit very badly: too short, too tight, not enough room for my deriere/ hips, very annoying! :P For the female techs out there, can you recommend a supplier or make please? Thanks!
niclights
Have you looked at army surplus? It may be they don't differentiate between male/female (or care about fittings much!) but they are hard wearing and do the job.
soundo26
google for a company called ARCO, they have a huge range of workwear, otherwise look out for "Dickies" workwear available from Wickes and most workwear suppliers.
dunk_1984
Vote here for Dickies Redhawk series for both trousers and shorts. Although I am Male.... Not sure if it matters.
frazer
I get all my work trousers from Workwear Trading. They appear to have a reasonably good womens section. Frazer
ryandell
Hi, I have recently bought a pair of Combat trousers from OSWALD BAILEY ,They are men's but I'm sure they would be fine, the material is long lasting as well. I had a look for women's combat trousers on their website but to no avail. Thanks, Ryan
paulears
Moderation: At the risk of being labelled sexist - Helen asked specifically for black combat style trousers for work that would fit a girl. So most of the fellas that have replied have suggested their own favourites, but sometimes added comments - such as "don't know if they are available for girls" - which doesn't really help. I suspect the reality is that most of the popular type fit girls fine - IF - they have figures that don't feature the words tall, slim, hips. From previous conversations with girls, the only ones that will fit properly are the ones that look like combats, but are fashion items. If anyone knows of a ladies version of proper workwear, please post - but please don't suggest bloke only brands.
GridGirl
Admittedly I am no longer in the UK, but when I was working there I used to buy my black combats at Dorothy Perkins. I got good wear out of them - and they were getting pretty rough treatment - and I seemed to be able to find pairs with plenty of pockets. Although, I do remember having trouble finding them at this time of year, it was much easier come autumn. What I particularly liked about Dorothy Perkins trousers was they fact that they carry short, regular and long length trousers - great for a not-very-tall curvy girl like me! Guest lightnix
I don't know when the next merchandise run will be (the last one having been not so long ago), but I found the Blue Room's own black combats to be of excellent quality. Just be totally honest about your size when ordering, as they are a snug fit; or get a size too large if you like them baggy.
eldar
Hello, I personally like Bench for thier combats. They are fairly well hardwearing for a 'brand' name and have a comfy fit (I'm 5ft 8' and size 12 = 28/30 regular leg). I have gone through the knee (always left!) of my jeans faster then the knee is wearing in my combats. They do several different styles and I like the pockets - I can fill up the leg ones with spanners and tape and not realise it till I empty my pockets at bed time! On the fashion side they often do the same style in different colours - I own a plain black pair, a green pair with dark stripes and a black pair with swirly black stitching (posh blacks!) that are all the same cut and fit. They can be a bit pricey but there is a discount store in Portsmouth (gun warf quays outlet stores) that knocks them down 50%. I live in them and I'm considering the shorts versions next. And as near to a sex and the city quote that I can give - they also look good with trainers or steel toe caps! Hope this helps eldar

GridGirl
It has just occurred to me that a couple of my female colleagues used to wear combats which were designed for emergency service workers - I don't know where they got them (the internet, I suspect!) - but they were really hardwearing and had loads of useful pockets as well as being women's fit. stoneworld
combats are a real pain for me!I hate those heavy dickies type combats and have been looking for ages for the ultimate pair of combats.Recently I bought a pair of craghoppers. Strictly they are walking trousers and don't have as many pockets as the usual combat but they are smart, light and I hope hard wearing. Anyway I know they do womens ones... niclights
Those look good. And sensible prices too. Got to love the fact they have a Bear Grylls range! Some interesting recommendations coming through. I know the clothing topic has come up before but I hope the OP doesn't mind it becoming slightly more general. I think it's a problem for all of us, male & female. What with trying to keep up the Fashion God status and all.... /edit: Why's nearly everything out of stock? Grrr. There I was thinking I could turn up to the next gig as Bear.
